We recently connected with Robbin Turner and have shared our conversation below.
Robbin, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose when I became a new mother.
As a first-time mother, I wanted to do everything right to honor this precious gift I’d been given. With family living across the country, my husband and I had to figure things out on our own. I read plenty of baby and parenting books, talked to other parents, and scoured the internet for information.
Realistically, nothing prepares you for motherhood (parenthood) except on-the-job-training.
When I thought I had a handle on things, my son began developing a red rash on his body that wouldn’t go away with the baby cream I used. Panic set in — OMG, what did I do wrong?! After all, I nursed him and ate a clean diet so as not to expose him to anything harmful.
We took our son to the pediatrician and he was diagnosed with eczema. She advised us to eliminate dairy and report the results to her in a couple of weeks. Eureka! The dairy caused his eczema, which is a common trigger. As a family, we switched to plant-based products, leaving dairy products behind.
Meanwhile, I wanted to remedy his dry patches caused by his eczema flare-ups. I was determined to take a plant-based approach to solving his dry skin.
I thought about my grandmother’s homemade remedies that were used to relieve our ailments. That’s when I realized that my purpose was to find and handcraft a plant-based moisturizer to relieve my son’s dry skin due to eczema.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Professionally, I am focused on helping people who suffer with dry, sensitive skin but struggle to find products that don’t irritate it.
Growing up, that was the story of my life. I suffered with sensitive skin. Everything I tried irritated my skin. It left my skin dry, itchy, and me scratching like a dog with fleas.
In researching natural remedies to help relieve my son’s eczema, I felt there were other families/people out there that were in the same situation. As a parent, it’s heartbreaking to watch your child suffer and the synthetic/prescription options offered were not helping my son’s eczema, but potentially making it worse over time.
By digging deep into my Africa heritage, I found natural remedies via African herbalism and plant-based ingredients. The butters and oils worked for my son’s skin. They helped smooth the dry patches, soothed the itch, and left his skin looking healthy again.
That is when I realized that I can help others in the same situation and Violet Botanical Skincare was conceived.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As I look back, three qualities I found most impactful in my journey were: 1) be fearlessly and boldly determined, 2) fully immerse yourself, educate yourself and learn all that you can about your desired field, and 3) don’t let people/your industry keep you in a box. Whether you choose a different path to solve the same problem or decide to completely break all of the rules (within reason), do it with confidence.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking to collaborate with dermatologists and independently-owned boutiques.
Researchers are now accepting that eczema relief benefits from an integrative approach. Combining a holistic approach–herbal remedies and meditation–along with a pharmaceutical approach has been successful for various patients. In some cases, they’re moving away from a strict pharmaceutical model.
I’d also like to partner with independently-owned boutiques that curate intentional, purpose-driven, handcrafted products. Personally, I like visiting boutiques that know the founder and/or the founder’s story, have a rapport with their customers beyond a sale, and truly believe in and supports the brand mission of the products they carry.
