We were lucky to catch up with Robin Howard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Robin, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
During COVID I started prioritizing my health. Exercise comes first every day, no excuses, and then I make dinner before I start work. It’s changed my life. I feel better than I ever have, I don’t feel rushed or overwhelmed, I’m always in lighter mood, and that’s made my work lighter.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an assemblage artist and freelance writer. As an artist, I work hard to make my practice sustainable so I use reclaimed materials as much as possible. The purpose of my work is to reintroduce people to wonder and curiosity. I want to put magic back into the world.
As a freelance writer, I write about art, architecture, real estate, culture, lifestyle, and whatever else needs written. I frequently ghost write for brands or CEOS. My favorite part of my job is how happy it makes people when they find out they don’t have to write the thing they’ve been dreading. As an anthropologist I approach marketing writing in holistic way, which is much more sincere. My clients are always happily surprised with my fresh hooks and angles. Most people hate to write and I love it, so when we find each other it’s a lot of fun.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If you’re a creative, learn the rules – whether it’s math or grammar or technique – so as you evolve you can break them. Be yourself in every aspect of your marketing, social media, and interactions. People appreciate authenticity.
Put integrity at the center of everything you do. It’s the foundation of a successful long game.
As a writer and an artist, I’ve had a lot of success because sometimes I’m the only person who has responded / followed through / communicated clearly. Talent is important but nothing is more important than being reliable.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
As an artist, I love collaborating with hotels and interior designers. Making or providing interesting work for interiors meant to create an experience is my favorite. As a writer, I’m always open to clients who are excited about what they do, whether it’s technology or design.
