Meet Roland Mann

We were lucky to catch up with Roland Mann recently and have shared our conversation below.

Roland, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I never had any issues with it. I was motivated and determined because I knew what I wanted to do. In fact, I feel Imposter syndrome is over-stated. Just do your thing.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I write comics and graphic novels, I run the small press comic publisher Silverline Comics, and I teach at the college level.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reading first and foremost. You can learn so much from reading. I’m one who believes that you can become a better writer simply by reading a lot of good content. Of course, you have to actually write something, but read, read, and read some more!

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking for people, especially artists, with whom I can collaborate. I love the original take an artist can have on the words that I write. I look for artists who love the craft of comic storytelling and have a strong desire to tell stories.
