Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Romin Irani. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Romin, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I’m not sure you ever “overcome” mental health issues. Mine has mainly been learning to live with a father who is Bi-polar and the way his mental health issue affect my mental health. It probably has been one of the hardest things I’ve had to deal with in my life as its an ongoing challenge with no end in sight. Boundaries are helpful and hurtful, they help you deal with the hardship of massive emotional swings. While at the same time lead to your family not understanding you and trying to heap more guilt on you to get rid of them. Balancing your own life and nuclear family to be in a healthy spot while trying to love and help someone who is struggling with mental health issues is not an easy task. If I’m not careful, leaning into the swings causes me to become unstable and that affect my wife, kids and business. However, having a wife has helped me see and experience what the patterns are and how they affect me has been very helpful in figuring out what is best for us. The hardest part is having your family see you in a different light because you aren’t “helping” the way they like you to.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a native San Diegan who really loves my city. I’ve always loved San Diego and burgers and am really enjoying this season of my life where I run a small burger business that’s based out of where I grew up, Mira Mesa. San Diego’s burger scene has been growing a lot in the last 2 years and I’m glad to be in/part of that. My burger business is probably the oddest/most unique setups in SD, its 3 pronged. Wednesdays I sell to the public through a pre ordered time slot system. Why? The main reason is I cook on a cast iron griddle which has limited patty space, so the time slots are based on what I know my maximum outputs to be. Why preorders? I’m not a huge fan of food waste and fresh, ground day of beef is really important to a great burger. Knowing what I’m selling that day helps optimize those 2 things. Fridays I usually popup at Breweries around SD and have a monthly running rotation at Pure Brewing in Mira Mar and Burgeon Beer in Escondido. Lastly on Saturdays I’m always catering private parties. Everyone has fond memories of parties they’ve been at and the good food that was served. I love being in those spaces and bringing an excellent fresh product (aren’t we all tired of eating cold chicken wings?). I’m always busting out new specials for my burger loving regulars and am currently working on a second milkshake catering business to go along side my burgers.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me its the old “jack of all” quote that has really helped me. I know enough photoshop to make basic edits, I know how to shoot and edit photos, I’ve had enough interactions with budgets that I can create my own systems in google drive and figure out costs. etc etc. Brand new business owners have to do all aspects of their business’ in the beginning, you cant avoid it. Learning a little about a lot of things can save you startup money and can go a long way to just get you going.
Honestly, if you feel you don’t know enough, with youtube and google searches you can pull together enough basic knowledge to just get started. After that its leveraging the people in your life that are better than you in certain areas and just learning little nuggets from them and putting them into practice.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Its very easy to point to our parents failures and all the things they didn’t do that have molded our lives in good or bad ways. However, even with my parents short comings I’m thankful that through a rough marriage and hard physical jobs that had opposing schedules. I always had stability. I really never lacked what I needed and was given opportunities if I wanted to try something new.
