We recently connected with Roy Studmire and have shared our conversation below.
Roy, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
From a young age, I have possessed an unwavering conviction that my purpose in life is to lead and make a significant impact. Numerous individuals have affirmed that God has a special plan for me, although the details of that plan remained a mystery. Regardless, I have always placed my trust in God, confident that He would pave the way for me. Even during times of homelessness, I clung to my faith, relying on God’s guidance. When I found myself without the means to feed myself, I entrusted my well-being to God’s providence.
Throughout my journey, I have encountered countless trials and tribulations. Yet, there has always been a constant presence, a driving force that beats within me: music. It is through music, my voice, and the experiences I have amassed that I have found a deeper purpose. In recent years, this purpose has transcended mere creation and has blossomed into a fervent desire to impact and change the world. By baring my soul and sharing my most vulnerable moments with others, I allow them to witness the profound relationship I have with God.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hey, what’s up world? I’m Roy Studmire, also known as International Show, and I am thrilled to introduce myself as an artist, producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and music director from Boston, MA. My purpose in life is to share the incredible journey I’ve been on and spread the message of Christ while pushing the boundaries of musical exploration.
When you listen to my music, you’ll witness the unique blend of futuristic and emotional vocals that I bring to the table, coupled with my distinct production style. It’s an experience like no other. Whether it’s my own artist catalog or the compositions I create for my clients, my exceptional sound engineering skills shine through in every piece.
I love experimenting with different genres, and my music reflects that. You’ll find elements of Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock, EDM, and Latin seamlessly woven into my songs, all accompanied by catchy and relatable lyrics that resonate with listeners.
While I initially gained recognition in the secular Urban market, I have redirected my focus towards faith-driven endeavors. I want to make an impact in the Christian community by staying true to myself and standing out. My work tackles edgy, lyrical, and thought-provoking themes, all wrapped in exceptional musicality.
I invite you to check out some of my projects, including the impactful series “Becoming I, II, & III,” “Transparency,” as well as my latest singles like “Vibrations,” “big, GOD,” “Alive,” and “King.” These songs represent my dedication to creating meaningful music that speaks to the soul and uplifts the spirit.
In January of 2023, a remarkable milestone was reached in my career as I proudly accepted a position as a professor at Berklee College of Music. I am honored to have the opportunity to teach hiphop songwriting and production at such a renowned institution. However, I recognize that this role carries a greater purpose—a mission to positively reshape the minds of creatives.
I firmly believe that by providing the right direction and guidance, we can transform how aspiring artists approach their writing styles. It is crucial to break free from the cycle and stereotype of rap as a toxic genre. Through my teachings at Berklee, I am committed to instilling a fresh perspective in the next generation of musicians, encouraging them to embrace positivity, substance, and meaningful expression in their work.
Beyond my involvement with Berklee, I have also spearheaded a transformative music program called T.R.I.M. (The Route Into Music). Currently implemented at the South Bay Correctional Facility, this program has had a profound impact on the lives of many residents. Through T.R.I.M., individuals are given the tools and opportunities to explore their musical talents, empowering them to break free from the confines of their circumstances and pursue a brighter future.
By combining my role as a professor at Berklee College of Music with the creation and implementation of T.R.I.M., I am dedicated to making a lasting difference in the lives of aspiring artists and incarcerated individuals alike. It is my fervent belief that through education, mentorship, and artistic expression, we can uplift communities and contribute to a more inclusive and positive music industry.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three fundamental skills that have profoundly shaped me and that I wholeheartedly encourage others to embrace are humility, faith, and perseverance. These qualities have not only been instrumental in my personal growth but have also played a pivotal role in my success in both business and life in general.
Humility, a trait of paramount importance, opens doors and allows for the cultivation of meaningful relationships. It grants us the ability to connect genuinely with others, which can prove vital to our endeavors. By remaining humble, we create an environment conducive to growth and collaboration, fostering opportunities for success.
Faith, an unwavering belief in something greater than ourselves, becomes especially significant during times of darkness and adversity. When faced with challenging circumstances, trusting that there is a way out or that our current struggles do not define our ultimate destiny can be transformative. Even in the face of uncertainty, faith becomes the driving force that propels us forward daily. It enables us to choose a narrative that resonates with resilience, declaring that we will triumph and make something remarkable of ourselves.
Perseverance, the steadfast commitment to endure and overcome obstacles, acts as the glue that holds everything together. It is the unwavering resolve to maintain faith when all else seems to be failing. Perseverance demands that we remain humble even when others overlook us or fail to appreciate our contributions. It is during these moments that the power of perseverance shines brightest, allowing us to rise above adversity and prove our resilience.
In summary, cultivating humility, embracing faith, and embodying perseverance are transformative skills that have shaped my life. They have allowed me to forge meaningful connections, overcome challenges, and persist in the pursuit of my goals. I firmly believe that by nurturing these qualities within ourselves, we can navigate life’s trials with grace and achieve extraordinary personal and professional growth.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
One challenge that I consistently grapple with is maintaining organization and effective time management. As a creative and multi-hat-wearing entrepreneur, my brain sometimes resembles a wild party rather than a well-organized workspace, that means it’s all over the place. I often find my thoughts scattered and my focus divided. However, I am actively working towards finding solutions and making adjustments to address this obstacle.
One strategy I am implementing is being intentional about managing my workload. Recognizing my limitations, I am learning to avoid taking on an excessive number of projects simultaneously. By doing so, I can allocate my time and energy more effectively, ensuring that each endeavor receives the attention and effort it deserves. Yes, I have learned the power of saying “NO” to tasks that can wait their turn and prioritizing like a pro.
Of course, let’s not forget the importance of minimizing distractions. I’m arming myself with laser-like focus and creating an environment that screams, “Get stuff done!” (minus the actual screaming, of course).
Now, I must admit, my efforts may not always result in instant perfection. Hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will my impeccable organizational skills lol. I am committed to refining my organizational abilities and time management skills, recognizing their significance in achieving personal and professional growth. With each step forward, I am gaining valuable insights and developing strategies to optimize my productivity and creativity.
