Meet Ruby Fay

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ruby Fay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Ruby, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Since a young age I have admired resilient people. It likely comes from my Chinese Grandparents who left China for Australia back in the post Gold Rush era. My Grandfather gave up a college scholarship to travel to OZ at age 17, only to work menial jobs to fund his family in China. He worked tirelessly which paid off as he opened a number of department stores which came to define part of the rural NSW region. He then paid for his entire family to join him and created jobs for them all.

I don’t take my ancestors footsteps lightly and recognize what they went through for us. I have lived and worked in various countries over my life time, reinventing myself every step of the way. I don’t believe in giving up and get restless standing still. I like the excitement of new experiences, meeting new people and learning something new.
Resilience feels like a very important trait for everyone living on this planet at this time!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I, like many of those of us here in LA, am involved in many different endeavors in any one week. I own/run a luxury real estate business which involves high end rentals & sales and I am a singer/songwriter creating beautiful music for film/tv. I am a creator at heart and see my business as an extension of this. Deal making and creating art use different areas of the brain, which can sometimes feel a little overwhelming if working on both the same day, however I like to stretch my capabilities. I keep telling my young son to acquire as many skills as he can and avoid being a one trick pony. Having the ability to pivot is gold. Businesses are cyclic and sometimes we can’t swim against the tide. This ties into resilience again!

Right now I’m finishing up an EP (5 songs) which I’m very excited about and potentially shooting a doc-series in Australia regarding my Chinese families journey.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Off the top of my head, three qualities which continue to work for me would be – belief, discipline and adaptability.

Belief in self is everything. There will be obstacles, naysayers, set backs continuously along the way. We must have our own backs no matter what!

Discipline. I trained in ballet at a very young age and was made to get up very early most mornings to attend lessons before school. This gave me structure and routine to keep moving. The training was hard and the teacher didnt cut us any slack. It taught me so many valuable lessons. We have to push ourselves when we don’t want to and often times at the worst possible moments. To succeed in most endeavors, self discipline is an essential trait.

Adaptability. This is very valuable when it comes to adapting to different personalities, places, work environments, countries etc. The ability to adjust and assimilate is super important. Not being rigid and thinking you know as we never do. Having this trait has allowed me to live and work in many cities and countries, without feeling completely alien.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Now this is not to come across as morbid but both my parents passed away at a relatively young age and as an only child I didnt really grow up with a strong sense of security and dependability. However due to their early departure I had to develop a deep sense of inner self. My Aunts would tell me I had the survival spirit which served me well throughout my career and personal life incarnations. Now I’ve converted the word survive to thrive. I have created a wonderful life for myself and my son. My son being my greatest accomplishment 😁
