We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ruby Herrera. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ruby below.
Hi Ruby, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in my Chicago upbringing. Think of my grandfather, navigating 15 inches of snow in Chicago daily to ensure our family’s stability. Simultaneously, my father adeptly managed a factory job while strategically investing in real estate. Fast forward to today, and my cousins and I are committed to upholding that standard. Today, I am committed to upholding that standard, acknowledging and perpetuating the sacrifices my grandparents made while forging their paths in Chicago’s dynamic business landscape.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
In my role as the owner of Ruby Creative Co., I empower nonprofits and innovators to enhance their influence through strategic marketing and branding. Concurrently, I serve as the Student Group Chair at AIGA DFW, fostering connections between the chapter and design schools through impactful programming. Through AIGA DFW, I organize events offering design students insights from speakers, participation in panel discussions, and engaging design challenges. Collaborating with diverse industries not only brings fulfillment but also nurtures a constant creative drive. My journey has transitioned from working with local clients to forming partnerships with organizations nationwide, including notable names such as the Cesar Chavez Foundation, National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, The Chicago Bulls, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. As a minority, woman-owned business, my goal is to persistently contribute to my community’s well-being in a positive way, fostering a sense of unity and connection through the power of design.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In reflecting on my entrepreneurial journey, a crucial skill that significantly influenced my path was adopting the mindset of, “I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to figure it out.” Another impactful aspect was honing my people skills, which played a pivotal role in promoting my design services, boosting my confidence, and fostering growth. Lastly, I’d recommend embracing constructive criticism for anyone running a design business; it serves as a catalyst for becoming a stronger designer. Expertise doesn’t happen overnight—it’s a journey of practice, patience, learning from failures, and, above all, summoning the courage and faith to persist.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client appreciates a clear vision, active communication, transparency, timely feedback, and trust in the designer’s expertise. I am passionate about community collaboration and find joy in working with nonprofit organizations aiming to elevate their branding and marketing collateral for a meaningful impact. Moreover, I partner with business owners who desire a distinctive, custom-made brand to stand out from the crowd.
