Meet Ryan Conlon

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Conlon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Ryan, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Just keep going. As hard as it gets just try not to give up. As the saying goes Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither will your career paths. Mental health can be a very challenging obstacle especially in terms of creativity. For me designing clothes sometimes my mental health can get in the way and create a sort of blockage there for me. If it gets that way, we try again the next day. Rainy days won’t last forever

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Back in 2016 I started my entrepreneur journey founding Blackguard clothing. From this we found our way dealing with alot of music artists wearing the brand in music videos. Naturally this led to me being signed as an artist manager, due to my work ethic. After a year here we branched out and created our production business. This was a business for artists. Offering music videos, freestyles, artwork and photography. We created a series on YouTube giving local artists a platform to upload for cheap (knowing first hand how expensive the industry can be for an independent artist). Finally in 2020 I opened my own barber shop space with a music studio next door. This lasted a year and I relocated my barbershop to my current location. I’ve been cutting hair for 7 years now. Just before I founded the very first Blackguard business back in 2016

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I definitely feel if it wasn’t for my drive when I was younger I would be no where near where I am now. Having such an enthusiastic mindset and wanting to do well at such a young age was 100% beneficial. Also personality too. As I have been a barber for so long a lot of my clientele basis relies on the service I offer and how comfortable the customer feels in the shop. From this customers become aware of other ventures in doing. Such as clothes and recording Advice for those starting out with businesses is just to keep going. Don’t overlook your weaknesses and dwell on them. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. Play to your strengths and understand where you can improve on your weaknesses. That’s how you grow

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Opening up my new barber shop has been a great improvement for me. Going self employed and receiving the support I get from doing this is truly amazing. Even when things do get overwhelming having that support can really go a long way. Especially let’s say I see a customer come into the shop wearing Blackguard clothing. There’s not much of a better feeling of accomplishment
