We recently connected with Ryan Payne and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My journey as an audio engineer has been very rewarding, and fulfilling. my work ethic comes from genuinely loving what i do. I love the people that I’m able to meet through this work, and i love creating and being able to build with musical artist. The fact that I’ve gained the trust of so many with my creative ear and follow through, keeps me accountable enough to always want to do a good job.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I guess for starters, my name is Ryan Payne. I go by RE-PLXY (replay), and I’m an audio engineer from Grand Rapids Michigan. There, i made a name for myself and made an undeniable impact recording, mixing, and mastering music for artist in our musical scene. While it’s still growing and developing, there is a lot of talent and I’m proud to be amongst so many creative people. I can’t talk about me without mentioning them, because they were willing to take a chance on me at time when i was unknown, and because of it, i was able to grow. I love the relationships i made in my home town and those I’ve made across the states
I’ve played a role in many records and have also provided background vocals.
I’ve also crossed over to making music of my own, as a way to show future prospects, what i can do for them as well.
I branded my work under the name RE-PLXY, because i care about high quality and high replay value. I want my work to be timeless, and a sensational listening experience.
A little something to look forward to, is a soon to be released project between myself, and long time friend, singer songwriter MOZAIA.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience is the most important quality and has severed me well. Engineering is still customer service at the end of the day, and it is not for the feint of heart, or those with fragile egos. At the end of the day, people are trusting me with their art, which is a privilege. And when you’re not good, people will let you know. But always being able to learn from the moment, helped me grow. I’m not perfect and have made many mistakes in this, but i have always been able to recover and become better than before.
Another, skill is being able to mute my own ego for the sake of the greater good. At the end of the day, i care about the highest possible outcome, and sometimes that means giving artists exactly what they asked for, even if it’s against my taste.
Lastly, is having Good taste. People come to me because i have good taste in musical engineering, and they trust that which is huge. But as said before, there are times to turn that off, and simply give someone what they’re looking for without complicating things, but still assuring the best that i can deliver for them.
My advice to anyone going into this field; it’s 50 about your skills, and the rest is about how personable you are, making people feel comfortable, and confident in you. Chemistry is everything.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone who knows what they want, but is open to creative input, as well as being able to give me creative input. I love working with artists who are prepared, well spirited, and open minded. One thing about me is that I’m a complete vibe in the studio, I look forward to the types of sessions where the artists and myself pour our creativity into the project and feel unrestricted by feelings of insecurity, or shyness. I meet my clients level wherever they are, fully prepared to give my all.
