We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Reveles a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Ryan with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic is a code of conduct that I utilize across all aspects of my life. Using my skills in association, I recognize successful patterns of routine in one area of my life and relate it to another.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Ryan Reveles, I’ve used the pen name Ryan FLuX in the majority of my work. I’m a southern California illustrator with a focus in comics and animation. Primarily my webcomic series and the subsequent animation series that pairs along with it has been my focus for the past 6 years.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
the three most impactful skills/ areas that helped me along my journey would be, cultivating and nurturing creativity from an early age, critical thinking skills in subjects like philosophy ethics, and a curiosity and profound respect for nature and the universe.
cultivating and nurturing creativity from an early age created a strong foundation for storytelling, character development, and an overall sense of play which I think is imperative to the creative process. remaining playful, loose, flexible allows thoughts and ideas so freely flow and develop in a positive environment, becoming hard on ourselves and over critical makes it almost impossible to think outside the box which I find is needed quite often.
critical thinking is important however, subjects like philosophy, logic and ethics, helps to bridge a foundation of understanding the natural progression of things, why and how things are and could be. with logic and reasoning we understand when things are contradicting and hypocritical. These concepts bring us closer to understanding the human condition and thus creating relatability to our characters.
Understanding the human condition, or having a drive to understand it, brings us closer to understanding the profound nature of human existence within the universe. with these concepts in mind a simple stroll through the park can be an amazing experience as one witnesses amazing mechanisms and life forms that live among us in our reality. living and experiencing life is the absolute foundation to every form of expression. we must live life to express it.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for opportunities to collaborate with other like minds whether their visual artists, writers, musicians or free thinkers. first and foremost, I tend to prioritize collaborations with people that respect the art that I do for the style that I draw. some people think that because I can draw, I’m a copy machine and they want me to draw like someone else. I usually don’t work that long with folks that have those kinds of expectations.
