We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sade Mowatt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sade below.
Sade, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity stems from my mom and grandmother. Growing up we never came from much but always had everything we needed. My mom is a single mother with 5 kids and thankfully she had my grandmother’s help. Over the years I’ve got to witness how big their hearts are and how generous they are whether people deserve their generosity or not. Although we didn’t grow up with much or had much to give my grandmother and mother would always be there to help anyone who needed it. This has become a big part of who I am today.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a content creator born and raised in Montreal, Canada. I never thought that this would be my career path since all of my schooling was done in science. I studied health science in college and then went to University to study to become an Athletic therapist. I grew up playing soccer from the age of 6 – 22 so I always thought I would be doing something with sports or health related. In my second year of university, I decided to switch to Business and a major in Marketing and I guess fell in love in some way because it was so new to me. I discovered the world of content creation during this time and thought to myself this is something I would love to do. In the beginning, I admired a lot of travel creators because traveling is something that I didn’t get to do much of until I was in my 20s. I figured this could be a great start since I was going off to New Zealand for a semester and what better place than there to create beautiful travel content? Not to say that I was good at it or anything haha. Once my semester abroad was done there was no way I could sustain posting travel-related stuff since I wasn’t traveling so I decided to try out other things I love, baking, DIY bracelets, fashion (sharing pieces on a budget), etc. Because I took school very seriously, I was never able to stay consistent so I would post here and there trying to figure out what I wanted to share. I graduated and got a job and worked the 9-5 + retail jobs until COVID hit and then I decided lets try and take this more seriously. This is when I started posting more consistently but still struggled to find exactly what I wanted to share about. Over time experimenting with different content styles and things I enjoyed I was able to narrow it down and still stuck with fashion, now beauty (more skincare, haircare) and overall lifestyle. I always knew that I just wanted to make sure I share things that can inspire my community to be true to themselves and to always go after what they want.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. My willingness to learn about the industry and do my best to apply what I learned
2. My work ethic
3. Being myself (although I feel I can definitely share more aspects of myself for people to see my full personality! Still working on this haha)
As long as you stay true to who you are and what it is you love doing or sharing, I feel like the rest just falls into place. It’s so cliche and I know everyone says it, but comparing yourself to others and trying to be someone you’re not can only take you so far. You start to feel drained and lost. In terms of having a good work ethic and willingness to learn in order to stay consistent I feel like you need to be doing something that sparks joy in you.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Because social media is constantly changing I feel like it’s so easy to get caught up in the trends, the new platform, new features, and so on. It sometimes causes me to feel overwhelmed and start doubting myself. I feel like something challenging for me right now is believing in myself. It’s something I’ve always struggled with, because I start to feel like I’m not doing enough or I simply just feel lost and unsure what I want to share with the world.
