We were lucky to catch up with Sakeenah Sievwright recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sakeenah , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Authenticity always holds true in any setting. Regardless of background, circumstances or culture, when you stand in your true self, giving all of your best-speaking and acting from the heart it really shines through! I’ve been in a classroom or work setting being the only golden girl, but it never stopped me from doing my best and making things happen, no intimidation and with a fearless approach knowing that I can be successful!

I am the CEO and owner of Soul Sweet Creations! We’re a Southern Cali’ online dessert shop specializing in tasty, baked -from-scratch desserts for craving customers and corporations! There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Commit, collaborate and be patient!
When you set your heart on your craft, you must commit to it wholeheartedly. Do your research and really understand the depth of what you’re signing up for. You really can’t commit to something if you don’t know what it’s all about.
Collaborate and network with other business owners that share a love for entrepreneurship and have a willingness to learn and grow. Surround yourself with others of a business mind, possessing other skills and strengths that can assist you in your business journey. There’s always something to learn no matter how much you know.
Be patient with yourself and know that God is working even if you don’t think so! Nothing worth having happens overnight so stay the course and know that everything is working in your favor as long as you do! Patience is such a big piece of this business journey! We can invest so much time and think that we should be at a certain stage when looking at others and where they are, leaving us feeling defeated. Don’t compare yourself to others and again, be patient with your progress because as long as you’re not in the same place as you were last year, last month or even yesterday, you’re moving towards your business goals. Just keep moving and you’ll be surprised at what you’ll see on the other side.
