Meet Sal Schittino

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sal Schittino a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sal, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
After surviving a near fatal attack in 2015, through the support of others and mental health professionals, I was able to overcome the diagnosis of PTSD and build an adaptability of mind and emotion to establish resilience in my life. As a mental health therapist who specializes in trauma, I use my experience and expertise to help others create resilience through the use of EMDR therapy.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Certified EMDR therapist and I have licensure in Maryland and Virginia. I specialize in treating trauma and anxiety disorders for teens and adults. I am most passionate about helping those who feel stuck in life because of their past to regain back control of their present. Trauma and anxiety are the thief’s of joy, therefore, I seek to help my client’s re-establish their mindfulness of self so they feel hope and experience resilience.

I also recently relocated my therapy practice, The Center for Empowerment and Resilience, to downtown Frederick, MD.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Advice,
1. Approach feelings and adversity head-on.
2. Reframe failure as a learning experience and don’t take yourself so seriously.
3. Develop a routine of discipline in your work day by accounting for every minute and prioritizing breaks and networking with individuals who match your morals and values.”

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking to connect with fellow therapists and healthcare workers who are trauma informed. I would like to connect with the LGBTQ+ community as well as organizations supporting Veterans to educate and inform about criteria of trauma and provide resources of support and empowerment through EMDR services.
