We were lucky to catch up with Samantha Luque recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Navigating spaces where I’m the only one who looks like me has taught me the importance of embracing my identity with confidence. I’ve discovered that my uniqueness as a Latina minority woman brings valuable perspectives to the table. By staying informed, fostering connections, and engaging in open conversations about diversity. Networking and seeking out mentors who understand my experiences have provided invaluable guidance. I’ve not only navigated these environments effectively but also paved the way for greater inclusivity and understanding. Through resilience and celebrating successes, I’ve shown that being true to myself is not only empowering but also an opportunity to inspire positive change.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I run a production company called SLlama Production that specializes in storytelling through film and photography. As a minority-owned business, we proudly celebrate the power of diversity, recognizing the unique perspectives and talents that each individual brings to the table. Our journey began with a vision to create a space where everyone feels valued and empowered to thrive in front and behind the lens. We strive to make a positive impact in our communities. We actively support initiatives that promote inclusivity. By partnering with organizations that share our vision for a more diverse and inclusive world.
Currently we are launching a Tv series called Breaking Barriers
Follow us on a groundbreaking journey as we explore and celebrate the vibrant tapestry of LGBTQ+ communities across the globe.
In each episode we take a deep dive into the unique stories with insightful interviews, we offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals, shedding light on their personal journeys, community events, inclusive businesses, and the organizations dedicated to fostering equality.
Our first season shift the Lens towards the United States, with a special focus on Florida, where the LGBTQ+ community faces unique challenges in the face of anti-gay legislation. With each episode, we peel back the layers to reveal the ways in which anti-gay laws affect the daily lives, rights, and freedoms of the LGBTQ+ community.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Some advice that was the most impactful on my journey, first was to truly follow what you are passionate about because this path is very difficult and take a lot of work. If you love what you do then everything will do worth it. Second, creativity is the heartbeat of filmmaking and photography. Experiment with new approaches and techniques, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Embrace your individuality and let your creativity guide your storytelling. My last piece of advice is practice consistently. Regular practice is essential for improvement. Dedicate time to create, experiment, and refine your skills. The more you practice, the more confident you’ll become in your abilities.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely, I’m actively seeking partnerships and collaborations with individuals, brands, and projects that share a commitment to embracing diversity and promoting inclusivity. If you’re passionate about championing minority voices, fostering representation, and celebrating unique perspectives, I’d love to connect with you. Whether you’re an artist, entrepreneur, or part of a project that aligns with these values, I believe that collaboration can amplify our collective impact.
