Meet Samantha Menendez

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samantha Menendez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samantha below.

Samantha, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Well, resilience is something that’s built over time through experience, challenges, and a deep sense of determination. Running a bar, or any business for that matter, requires a lot of resilience. Every day brings its own set of obstacles, whether it’s dealing with tough customers, navigating financial uncertainties, or handling unexpected crises. But what keeps me going is my passion for what I do, my belief in the value of hard work, and the incredible support system I have around me, including my staff, friends, and family. Ultimately, it’s the combination of all these factors that helps me stay resilient in the face of adversity.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Absolutely, I’d be happy to share more about myself and my business.

I am the proud owner of One Shot Back, a vibrant and welcoming establishment nestled in Downtown Denver. Our bar is more than just a place to grab a drink; it’s a community hub where people come together to unwind, connect, and create lasting memories. What sets us apart is our commitment to providing not only exceptional drinks but also outstanding customer service and a warm, inclusive atmosphere.

One of the most exciting aspects of running One Shot Back is the opportunity to curate unique experiences for our patrons. Whether it’s hosting live music performances, trivia nights, or themed parties, we’re always looking for ways to keep things fresh and exciting. We also take pride in supporting local artists and musicians by showcasing their work and talents whenever possible.

Overall, my passion lies in creating a welcoming space where everyone feels like they belong, whether they’re stopping by for a quick drink after work or celebrating a special occasion with friends. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a vibrant community and look forward to continuing to serve our patrons with excellence and dedication.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Leadership: Effective leadership skills have been essential in managing our bar successfully. This includes the ability to inspire and motivate my team, make tough decisions when necessary, and provide clear direction and guidance. Developing leadership skills involves continuous learning, listening to feedback, and leading by example. Building a positive and supportive work culture where team members feel valued and empowered is key to fostering productivity and success.

Business Acumen: Understanding the business side of running a bar is crucial for long-term sustainability and profitability. This includes financial management, inventory control, marketing strategies, and legal compliance. Having a strong grasp of these aspects allows me to make informed decisions, identify opportunities for growth, and mitigate risks effectively. Continuously educating myself on industry trends, consumer behavior, and best practices in business management has been invaluable in staying competitive and adapting to changes in the market.

Customer Service Excellence: Providing exceptional customer service is at the heart of the hospitality industry. Building strong relationships with customers, anticipating their needs, and delivering memorable experiences are key drivers of customer satisfaction and loyalty. This involves training staff to prioritize customer care, resolving issues promptly and effectively, and soliciting feedback to continuously improve service quality. Investing in customer service training and fostering a customer-centric mindset among my team has been essential in building a loyal customer base and ensuring the success of my bar.

For those early in their journey, my advice is to prioritize personal and professional growth. Take every opportunity to learn and develop your skills, whether through formal education, hands-on experience, or networking with others in the industry. Don’t be afraid to seek guidance from mentors or peers who have more experience, and be open to feedback and constructive criticism. Stay resilient in the face of challenges, remain adaptable to change, and prioritize building strong relationships with those around you. With dedication, hard work, and a commitment to continuous improvement, you can achieve success in the bar industry and beyond.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I have been fortunate to have a strong support system that includes my co-owner, mentors, industry peers, and my team. While each has played a significant role in my journey, I would say that my co-owner has been the most helpful in helping me overcome challenges and develop essential skills, qualities, and knowledge needed for success. Our partnership is built on mutual respect, trust, and collaboration, allowing us to leverage each other’s strengths and support each other through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. While my co-owner has been a central figure in my journey, I am grateful for the support and guidance of everyone who has contributed to my development as a female bar owner. Their encouragement, expertise, and unwavering support have been essential in helping me navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship and realize my vision for our bar.
