We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samira Holland. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samira below.
Samira, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
It honestly is a daily task. There are so many talented businesses that pop up daily. Social media is always showing you that you COULD be doing more. You SHOULD be posting more. You HAVE to always be “on point!” This passed month I really took a break from social media. Just being an observer but not feeling the pressure to be a participant. I was able to live in the actual moment. Focus on my beautiful loving clients that choose me every month. Enjoy the slow days and filling that time and space with my son and family. Catching up on taking care of me. My end goal of course is to be full time waxing. To have to schedule off for vacations and time away. To need a social media manager an assistant and maybe one day hire others to expand my business. But for now. I’m focused on my lane. My brand. Sometimes we feel in order to post in order to be a social media personality that we already have to have something worth talking about. I’m learning that being yourself to the core. Finding your people and loving them being grateful for them. Is what brings you more of that energy. It’s easy to compare yourself to others. To feel less than. But why make yourself feel bad for being exactly where you’re meant to be in this moment? Take it step by step and we will all get there when the time is right!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’ve been my own boss and business owner for 4 years. But only in 2022 started waxing Full-time after having my son. It has been a rollercoaster. So many changes in such a short time. So finding ways to make clones of myself has been a thought on the daily. I’ve been licensed since 2013. Starting off in a big wax chain. I would say my skill set aside from hair removal is healing. I’m a firm believer that every single person could thrive with more human touch and interactions in their life. Some of us don’t get hugs. Told I love you or have someone checking in on us On the daily or even monthly basis. My clientele are my friends my family. In our wax sessions we are more than surface conversations. I want each and every one of my SMHbabes to feel free, beautiful and loved. The plus! Smooth hair free skin that’s softer than a cloud & glows like the sun. They all leave with a hug. Feeling empowered strong and ready to conquer the next step in their life. Filling up the cup they carry. Giving them an ear and a shoulder. It gives me life to know I’m taking a bit of weight off of someone. Working in a big wax chain. Even then, My client base was Brazilian wax focused. So when I went out on my own I knew I needed to sharpen my skill set and learn more about the actual skin side of waxing. Not just the hair removal. Since then I have added more services geared towards yoni care and health. (Yoni steams & Vagacials) Sugaring hair removal and products made by myself or other Estheticians that get results without harsh chemicals. I love every single second of waxing in my space above the clouds. I love my clients my SMHbabes. I’m so excited and blessed that I get to do what I love, dance, sing and laugh with a group of friends and family that continues to expand.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I feel like every year or so we should completely shed our skin of habits our own stubbornness. It’s easy to get set in your ways, to stay in your box of skills or what you’re comfortable doing. In the beauty and skin industry things change almost daily’. So sifting through fads. Getting proper education and in turn educating your clients is what has set me apart. Also listening to what clients actually want in their services. When I first started. I was using bigger name brands not so gentle on the skin but got results quick. Clients want natural gentle but effective without side effects. Now I do my research on Esthetician made products that are gentle and are geared towards hydration this is the key to glowing skin. Close to painless removal and that glow. My focus is skin. How can we get it healthy and happy. While informing clients that happy healthy skin is created by team work. Staying consistent and using your recommended skincare is what gets and keeps results. For anyone starting out. Find your center. What is the focus of your business? lashes or facials find that one thing that you love about what you do and hone in on it. Study that aspect and find your audience. It takes time but it will start to grow.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I would say holding myself accountable. I’ve had the same policies almost since the day I opened. But I always feel bad for abiding by my own rules. I tend to waive fees. I don’t like arguing with clients because they don’t want to pay a no show fee. They forgot to cancel their appointment and want me to cancel it and reschedule with out being charged. It makes me uncomfortable so I just do it. But I have to stick to my policies so I’ll establish a consistent level of professionalism and in turn get my deserved respect and gain clientele that will follow and appreciate my boundaries. I also struggle with asking for help. Reviews and referrals are the biggest thank you for a growing business. It can feel awkward to ask for their feedback to their face. As someone who frequents small growing businesses. I tend to leave my review right after I leave. While I’m in the car. I know It brings a smile and warmth to my heart to get those notifications for my business. So I don’t hesitate to do it for others.
