We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samuel Jurkovič a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Samuel, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I don’t consider my appearance anyone else’s business, and in today’s world, individuality is generally accepted. I often work with artists, directors, and creatives, so I rarely feel ‘alone,’ even if I’m the only one heavily tattooed in the room. My focus is always on delivering quality work, and that’s what I believe ultimately matters.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Sam, and I work as a sound architect, designer, and mixer in my own studio, Sound Garden, based in Prague.
I graduated in sound design from Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín, Czech Republic
I specialize in creating sound collages from analog recordings, modulating them in post-production. This approach lets me fully explore the space within my studio, where I also handle sound supervision, editing, and mixing. In my view, the character and uniqueness of sound make up more than 50% of a project’s success; placing those sounds thoughtfully within the narrative is the real art.
I’ve worked on countless projects, from commercials and feature films, art installations to video games. Since 2024, I’ve been part of the Czech Film Academy and am a proud recipient of the Czech Lion award for best sound in a film.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important points in my journey were:
• Persistence
• Love for my craft
• Not focusing too much on business while still being able to ask for fair compensation for my time
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Myself and the people who believed in me
