We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sandi Griffin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sandi below.
Sandi, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only person in the room who looks different from others can present unique challenges, but it doesn’t mean you can’t be effective or successful. In fact, embracing your uniqueness can become an asset. I was the only female coach and athlete in a male dominated space – the gym.
I quickly discovered persistence and resilience are vital qualities. Expect challenges and setbacks, but view them as opportunities for growth. Learn from failures, adapt to changes, and bounce back stronger. Develop a mindset that embraces challenges as stepping stones to success. In my athletic training, in order to make progress and improve my physical fitness, I needed subject my body to a greater workload than it is accustomed to. This same principle applies in our growth personally and professionally.
It took some time to develop my strength and confidence in that space, but I recognized had expertise in areas that others did not. I possessed the same authority to be in the room as everyone else, it was only myself I needed to convince. I strive for excellence in my field, continuously developing my skills and knowledge through education, training, and practical experience. In becoming an expert in my domain, I established credibility and recognition of my unique strengths and the value I brought to the table. I now stand in any room confident in my knowledge, skills and ability to connect with people in any industry.
Additionally, I continue to build a strong support network. Surround yourself with mentors, colleagues, and friends who can provide guidance, support, and encouragement. Seek out allies who can understand and advocate for your experiences. As you continue to learn and grown in your field, be willing to be both mentor and mentee. Establishing lasting relationships will always open doors to new opportunities..
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

In my 15 years as a professional coach, I have grown to understand that most people reach a moment in their life where they need help. This is almost always a result of an emotional or physical trauma (example: abuse, car accident, etc), past and/or present. Having compassion, patience and being able to truly listen to a person will go far beyond any meal plan or training program in helping them achieve true health, wellness and success in their life. I may only be the start or just one small piece of their journey, but I am committed to making every moment count.
My brand and my mission have always been – and always will be – centered around building a stronger, healthier, more empowered community, one person, one relationship at a time.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my journey, overcoming the fear of failure, cultivating integrity, and embracing grit are three key attributes that had a profound impact. These qualities are essential for personal growth and professional success. The fear of failure can be paralyzing, preventing one from taking risks and pursuing their aspirations. However, in overcoming this fear I recognized that failure is not the end but rather a stepping stone to success. I now understand that failure provides valuable lessons, insights, and opportunities for growth. By confronting my fears and embracing the possibility of failure, I opened myself up to new experiences, challenges, and achievements.
Integrity is another fundamental quality that shaped my journey. Integrity is a steadfast commitment to moral and ethical principles, honesty, and consistency in actions and decisions. Maintaining integrity allowed me to build trust and credibility with others, fostering strong relationships and collaborations. It provided a solid foundation for personal and professional success, and enabled me to make choices that aligned with my values, even in the face of adversity. Upholding integrity also meant taking responsibility for my mistakes, learning from them, and making amends when necessary. This unwavering commitment to doing what is right ultimately shapes one’s character, reputation, and long-term success.
Grit, often described as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, is another crucial attribut. It encompasses my ability to stay committed, focused, and determined despite obstacles and setbacks. Gritty individuals possess a powerful combination of resilience, passion, and a growth mindset. They view challenges as opportunities for learning and improvement, rather than as insurmountable barriers. Maintaining a strong sense of purpose, has allowed me to push through difficulties, setbacks, and even failures, continuously striving to achieve my goals.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I rest! Rest is of utmost importance when you are overwhelmed. In today’s fast-paced and demanding world, it is easy to get caught up in a cycle of constant busyness and neglect our own well-being. However, taking time to rest and recharge is crucial for both our mental and physical health.
The world will not stop revolving if I take a few hours – or even a whole day! – for myself. When you are overwhelmed, your ability to concentrate, make decisions, and solve problems is diminished. My ability to look at situations positively, and from a growth perspective, also declines. Taking a few minutes to breathe and step away from your work can be far more beneficial than you realize. By prioritizing rest, you create space for self-care and and approach challenges with renewed energy and clarity. Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish but essential for your well-being and long-term success.
