We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sandra Ocasio . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sandra below.
Sandra , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
For me the only way I got over imposter syndrome was understanding that I can’t get good at anything unless I keep trying it. Everyday I show up wanting to be a little better everyday.
I remember telling myself, “I want to be a sought out speaker”, and every time I got the opportunity to speak, I would freeze. The only way I started getting good at speaking was getting consistent with it. The consistency brought confidence and that confidence diminished the imposter syndrome feeling.
Get consistent, get confident, ditch the imposter syndrome.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I started my online brand after after experiencing my first military move in early 2016. I left a corporate position to follow my husband on military orders to Hurlburt Field, FL.
At the beginning I started by offering Virtual Assistant Support to Female Entrepreneurs Coaches. One year into business, I discovered my passion for sales funnels, systems, and automation. Revamped my focus & services and now supports hundreds of Online Coaches with 5 & 6 Figure Digital Launches.
I coach in multiple 7-Figure Coaching Programs and private communities supporting hundreds of women get clear on their messaging and launch strategies that will allow them to increase their impact and income while they engage, excite, and enroll their audience.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
A few skills that have helped me tremendously in this entrepreneurship journey were skills I learned in corporate.
1. Being tech-savvy, this was a skill I developed from having access to so many different systems and platforms to be able to perform my duties as a payroll professional.
2. Taking leadership courses in corporate helped me gain the skills and tools to work efficiently and effectively with big teams and having the emotional intelligence to work with different personalities.
3. Being organized. That’s a simple one but so necessary when building your own brand. This was also one that I lost track of once I transitioned from corporate to Entrepreneurship because at the beginning I didn’t have the discipline. Once I went back to the fundamentals things I already knew from corporate it helped me tremendously.
My best advice is for anyone starting out is any chance you get invest in your mindset, personal development and your skills. Your future you will thank you!
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
The first thing that I recommend is to get brutally honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses.
At the beginning we think we need to do all the things to be successful but the truth is if you stay in your area of expertise and outsource the areas you are not so efficient in, this allows you to buy your time back. Which then allows you to focus on the things you are great at and that’s servicing the people you are called to serve.
Stay in your lane. Don’t try to do all the things alone.
Just like you go to other experts for other areas of your life, like Doctors for your medical needs, Lawyers for your legal needs, and many more, you need a business coach to get the proper guidance to run a profitable business.
Think about it, you don’t buy a car and think you need to become a mechanic to operate the vehicle. Sure you may want to know some basics. The same applies for business, you don’t need to become a web designer, branding specialist, or tech guru to run a business.
If you decide to DIY and bootstrap just keep the momentum and make sure you keep making progress moving forward. Don’t stay stuck in one area for too long. Progress over perfectionism.
I made the mistake of doing it all at the beginning, and the reality was that my business logo changed a bunch of times, my brand colors changed a bunch of times, my services and area of expertise also changed and evolved.
At the beginning I was not clear on my purpose. Once I got the clarity on who I was serving and how I was serving my target audience, it made a huge difference in how I showed up. And that clarity came from hiring the professionals in those areas I was not great at.
