Meet Santrece Roberts

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Santrece Roberts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Santrece, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Throughout my career as a Black woman, I have often found myself as the sole representative in the room that looks like me or one of very few. Early on, I recognized that the path to success for me differed somewhat from that of my counterparts. Although being the “only one in the room” might seem like a disadvantage to some people, I’ve come to accept and embrace it. I’ve been acknowledged for my talents, leading to new opportunities.

I firmly believe that if I’m invited into a room, I belong there. The same goes for having a seat at the table—I confidently position myself and take it upon myself to actively contribute to the conversation. I make myself know, In situations where I am the only one present, there can be a tendency to suppress my unique qualities. However, I’ve learned that embracing my authentic self is a powerful advantage, fostering valuable connections and opportunities.
I absorb as much knowledge as possible from those in the room, consistently learning from individuals who have achieved greater success than me.

Despite facing distinct challenges, I am resilience and adapt. When unexpected challenges arise, I approach them with creative solutions, thinking outside the box. I constantly ask myself how I can pivot my services or discover new opportunities that set me apart. Making sure that build a supportive network is essential, and I actively connect with fellow business owners, participate in industry associations, and seek mentorship to further my journey.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the proprietor of Caterpillar Corner Child Care and Learning Center, boasting over a decade of extensive experience working with children in both childcare and school settings. The inception of Caterpillar Corner began as a home childcare service in a modest two-bedroom residence, driven by a keen awareness of the demand for superior childcare in my community.

Observing the lack of access to high-quality childcare for Black families in the inner city, I set a goal to offer exceptional childcare services. Committed to continual improvement, I transformed my home childcare venture into Caterpillar Corner, which now serves Holt, the Lansing School District, and the Pontiac Area School District. Established in 2014, Caterpillar Corner LLC was born out of my desire to bring a quality center to my hometown of Pontiac.

Caterpillar Corner Child Care stands out by providing one of the largest infant classroom placements for infants aged 6 weeks to 24 months. Our childcare services prioritize educational, developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities. Families benefit from a single location offering quality childcare, before and after school care, and educational support in a secure and nurturing environment.

With centers in Holt and Pontiac, Caterpillar Corner also provides before and after-care services for the Lansing School District (Post Oak, Lyons, Forest View, Riddle, Gardner, Willow, and Reo Elementary schools). Our mission is to furnish quality childcare and educational services that enhance each child’s development. We aim to offer developmentally appropriate childcare for preschoolers, focusing on individual age and ability to stimulate social, cognitive, physical, and emotional growth. We provide FREE childcare services for families with qualifying criteria for children aged 0-5. we provide learning and education for all children, irrespective of race, creed, sex, religion, national origin, or physical condition. Our commitment ensures that families do not need to venture beyond their community in search of high-quality childcare—we are here in the community.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that had the most significant impact were being resilient, learn to adapt, and be confidence in your talents. Additionally, bringing your authentic self to the table. You are uniquely amazing.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My family has been instrumental in assisting me in overcoming challenges and cultivating the necessary skills, qualities, and knowledge for success. From an early age, they instilled in me the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Witnessing their remarkable work ethic and navigating through situations where they were the only black individuals in the room, facing racial discrimination, I learned valuable lessons on resilience and overcoming adversity. They emphasized the importance of confidence in embracing my identity and recognizing the value I bring to any space.
