We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Hamilton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
This is a really solid question. I believe finding your purpose is a constant journey throughout life. Things change. Your purpose may too. Also, sometimes the concept of finding your “one-and-only” purpose is a lot of pressure…even too much sometimes!
Personally, I always loved creating art in various forms. I wrote so many stories in little notebooks since I was learning how to write. I took a ton of photos, and eventually, videos that inspired me to tell stories with them and put together my own movies while growing up. I played various instruments for fun and drew, painted, and loved all things art. As a very emotional person, I always loved channeling and feeling my emotions through – and absolutely became inspired once I started officially acting. Really, there are moments I can look back on in my childhood that inspired me along the way, but finding my purpose has really come from not trying to plan my future too much and really enjoying the present doing the things I love to do and spending time with my loved ones. Honestly, I still live by that!
Once I realized that the art I was creating for fun had an impact on the people who saw it, it felt right to focus on it more professionally. I wanted to always do what I loved to do and make a living out of it and I’m so proud to say that I have.
There were moments growing up I remember sitting in the movie theater and feeling tears of pure excitement and passion form when the music and visuals and emotions from the actors on the screen all blended together. I’ve had a lot of spontaneous moments where those types of tears form. It’s a feeling I call my purpose and some sort of higher power telling me I’m on the right track. (It’s amazing and so magical when these moments happen!)
I think to summarize it up, I found my passion through enjoying life and doing what I wanted to do. If you’re reading this and want to know how to find your passion, I think looking back to your childhood dreams really helps. What would you do, even today, if money and current responsibilities weren’t in your way? DO that. One step at a time, maybe a little bit each day. It’s incredible how well life works out when you’re on the right path.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a creative artist of many forms! I’m the author of two young adult fiction novels – “The Enchantress (a Royalty Status novel)” – also adapted as an original screenplay – and “The Lies We Tell”, as well as, an original photography/poetry book, “LA Mermaids”, which is also a companion novel to my original web series I wrote/directed/produced/starred in, “LA Mermaids” (on YouTube). I’m also an actress living in LA and working on various film/tv/commercial/print/etc. projects, musician/singer/songwriter currently working on debut music, filmmaker, content creator, model, and artist who loves to create and inspire others to follow their dreams! I also work as a party princess/mermaid/character performer, and studio tour guide!
I love enjoying life and doing the types of things that bring me and those around me joy and happiness. I am definitely aware I do a lot, but I truly love all that I do! It makes me so excited to work on a new project and I enjoy hearing feedback and seeing the reactions of others when something I did inspires them as well. I’m currently living my dream life and in the works of a major dream project, original music, more “LA Mermaids” episodes coming soon, and another novel in the “Royalty Status” series! It’s really exciting and I can’t wait to talk more about what I’ve been working on lately!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Positivity – this is KEY. Look, I’m not saying I’m perfectly sunshine all the time, but focusing on positivity grows more positivity in life so it really helps keep me happy, healthy, and motivated! My advice here is to try to stop saying any negative things – especially about yourself – and cutting out any negativity that may be in your life. Also, find the positive perspective on everything. I also find that it’s easy to get overwhelmed by life sometimes, even if you’re enjoying it. Taking moments to remember how much you’ve grown and focusing on the accomplishments that make “young you” proud helps! 2. Happiness – focus on what makes you happy! This goes with my first note, but I find that when I’m happy, things tend to go really well. It’s a simple thing that goes a long way. Happiness is contagious!
3. Balance – this is something I have always tried to improve upon, especially considering how much I tend to do and how often life changes. As a result of burning out, I have found that balance is so important. We live in a hustling world but it’s ok to relax and give yourself time to recharge. I find that adding breath work, sound baths, yoga, and meditation helps – but so does just doing something fun and spending time with loved ones. It’s ok to take a break and it’s also ok to work a lot. Finding balance is the key to both!
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I tend to get overwhelmed a lot and especially this past year, I’ve noticed I am getting more overwhelmed easier than ever before and it’s increasingly difficult to resolve. Life has a lot of pressures sometimes and the good things and the bad things can both be overwhelming.
What I have found really helps is talking it through with loved ones. Feel the emotions as they happen. Get help if you need it and even if you don’t feel like you need it, but you think it may help. Do the things you want to do if there were no responsibilities in the way. Take time for yourself. It truly helps! Everyone has different techniques on what works for them, but personally speaking, I love writing things down too, listening to music, creating art, and healing through sound baths and meditation to really dive deep within myself and just listen. Deep down, we have all the answers we seek. Listen to your intuition…it knows the way.
