We were lucky to catch up with Sarina Martin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarina, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
In commercial real estate you are not going to find many black women in this field. Its a mans game especially white men. It doesn’t discourage me. Even when I realize they treat me different or not really open to including me in conversations or they look me over cause they think I am not that competent in the field I’m in. It only motivates me to show them other wise. I am also an observer. So I take away a lot of knowledge when I get in a setting like this. I watch how they talk and listen to the subjects they are talking about and it helps me grow my career. I believe more people like me will end up in settings like this so I am very hopeful, but I realize it starts with me and representation matters.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a Commercial and Residential realtor in Atlanta, Ga. I specialize in restaurants, land, and buying and selling, and I also have my own rental company, Martin and Martin Tenant Placement Services LLC that helps people that are not ready to buy, get in rental townhomes/condos and single family. I have also created a how to Ebook called “How to Obtain a Restaurant Space” .
The most exciting and special thing about what I do is helping my community become homeowners or helping them get a brick and mortar for the business they have been dreaming of. Lots of people call realtors dream makers and that is literally what we do. My main goal is education minorities on the power of real estate on all aspects. Rentals, or ownership and improving the community as a whole.
I have an education series launching soon that will be an in person education series on my ebook “how to obtain a Restaurant Space’ and help business owners understand the need for for certain documents to obtain such spaces. This was an area that I saw was needed and I plan to act on this.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being observant, being open to learning from people that have already established in the area I am trying to make my mark in and also continuing to study and realize what the market needs. Being assertive and realizing no one is going to take my business to the next level but me.
This plays a major part in my day to day business. Its the reason I get up in the morning to check emails, cold call, and make business happen for me.
Anyone looking to start their journey in real estate you must understand this is your business. You are considered an independent contractor so no one can create business for you. So get out everyday and talk to people no mater how excessive you think it is. Build your deals, build your contacts, and I guarantee you can make it in this business by following these qualities and skills.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with. I am launching a mentorship and an in person class that helps educate the community on the importance of real estate.
To keep updated on when these classes will take place you can email me at Sarinamartin02@gmail.com or follow my instagram and turn on the post notifications Sarina_Realtor.
