We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Savanna Cummings. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Savanna below.
Hi Savanna, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I ran towards the thing that made me feel the most alive.. Since I can remember, I have been drawn to music. I am big on trusting my gut and my intuition to guide me, and I’ve always felt like singing and creating art is what I was put on this earth to do.
Purpose can be tricky, and sometimes it’s discovered super early on in life, or a lot later. Regardless, I think the best way to find it if you are unsure, is start with what you feel naturally drawn to, what is your dream job, what are you naturally gifted at, and then nurture those gifts.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a 23 year old pop singer/songwriter based in Nashville, TN. I’m originally from Brandon, FL and I moved to Nashville when I turned 18 to pursue music full time.
I write songs from the most authentic and honest place that I possibly can. Every song I write is based off real life experiences/emotions that I have been through or am currently going through. I hope that by doing that I am able to connect to fans in a super real and deep way, to help put to words what someone may be experiencing or feeling, to make art that impacts people, music that inspires them.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Knowledge of the old business vs the current music business 2. Discipline
3. Authenticity
I think in any career learning the ins and outs of the business can only help you and set you apart. The music industry is constantly changing and evolving, so staying on top of what is currently happening while also studying how the industry has shifted overtime helps give you perspective and direction for what steps to take next to keep your career growing.
Discipline in anything is extremely important in your success. The music industry has a lot of ups and downs, a lot of high highs and low lows, you need thick skin. It is important to develop that discipline and remain focused especially when the lows hit, it will help cultivate a healthy mindset to keep you going when you don’t feel motivated to.
Authenticity as a creative is one of the most essential parts of your success. Being true to you and not trying to be anyone else, is when I think you feel the most fulfilled creating art, but also the best way for you to create a fan base that is genuine and long lasting.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I start to feel overwhelmed, I take a step back and try to name the thing/things that are causing me to feel that way. From there, I usually spend some time alone and try to reset, whether that is by sleeping, journaling, watching tv, working out, or talking to a friend. Work life balance is super important to me, and is something I am consistently trying to improve.
