We were lucky to catch up with Sayuri Tsukahara recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sayuri, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Mental Health is a subject that I have learned to care about because it has shown me the worst and best versions of me. I personally dont think you overcome a mental health issue, at least not in my case, you learn to live with it and accept it and eventually learn from it but its always a very slow process.
It wasn’t until my early 30s that I started having anxiety and panic attacks. Motherhood related, I guess. A mother’s love can sometimes be so strong and so terrifying that it takes you to dark places, to the “what ifs” and “worst case scenario” places.
I struggled for many months until I found the right tools that would help me on my recovery path and I hold on dearly to them. Im a constant work in progress, life throws you triggers on a daily basis so its hard to say Im cured but I can say I have more knowledge now to recognize when my mind is going to those dark places and I can act faster before it gets too bad.
My business is also a great outlet to release anxiety and keep me on a creative path instead of a self destructive one.
My anxiety showed me how I can be at my lowest but it also showed me how strong I can be. It gave me the worst days of my life but it also led me to appreciate the good ones. It was the reason I began my Etsy shop and for that Im very thankful for.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I own a small Etsy Shop named Boho Bela, where I sell handmade goods like dream catchers, macrame art and hair bow holders. in 2018, I started having anxiety problems, I was a full time mom and I needed a way to keep my brain focus on something I enjoyed. I consider myself a creative person, always been inclined to arts and crafts but mostly to art as a way of expression and therapy. So one day I decided to make a bow holder for my daughters because their bows collection was getting out of control and after making the first one, my husband suggested to try to sell more of them. My friends bought from me and then I discovered Etsy. When I got my first order, I was beyond excited and then it has been slowly growing ever since.
I can say that without any marketing efforts or investment, I have been able to sell over 1000 items in every State in US and across the world to places like Japan, England, Spain, Netherlands, Mexico, Canada and Costa Rica.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
You need to be patient, you need to believe and you need to keep trying. Results in any aspect of life dont come over night, patience is key.
Believing in yourself most importantly and in the what you are creating can help put your mind on the right track.
And living on trial and error, what works for some may not work with you, so its important that you keep trying and failing until you find that something that makes it all worth while.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely! I would like to find small curated shop owners that can display my items and sell them to their clientele. I would also love to partner with hair bow makers to create packages and sell my bow organizers along with their bows. I think any collaboration with another creative mind will be amazing and Im looking forward to making that dream come true!
