We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful SCOTT O’REILLY. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with SCOTT below.
SCOTT, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I’ve always had the capacity to visualize perceptibly for as long as I can remember. So, when I decided to try my hand at a career in video production, it came rather naturally to me. After a few successful videos I produced as a hobby, I was ready to invest in a good digital camera that I would use to create videos for a living. I knew I wanted a digital workflow and that the camera had to be HD. However, I could not ignore some of the incredibly cinematic HD video images I was seeing online from a photography camera, the Canon 5D Mark II. At the time, this was an incredibly risky idea but it was a risk I had to make because again, it produced the images that I saw in my head as opposed to the typical cameras of the day. This was the start of what is now known as the “DSLR Revolution” and because I was able to be at the forefront of this phenomenon, it catapulted my video production career forward when people saw my reels. However, when I showed up with a DSLR, No one thought I was serious. Not many producers believed this small hand-held camera and refused to “look ridiculous” on set. I was determined to prove them wrong. As a result, I ended up doing video productions all on my own. Having a small camera actually made me very nimble and fast and I always knew exactly what I wanted to capture. It’s a workflow that I’ve spent years refining and now it continues to serve me very well.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I specialize in Corporate Video that is infused with entertainment. I think brands, especially corporate brands focus too much on information and less on enjoyment of their content. When you ask someone to watch a video, you are asking for one or two minutes of their life so that means you owe them something. That something is entertainment value. the video must be enjoyable to watch. That’s where my specialty lies.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My advice is not to fall in love with your process. I am always looking for a skill or tool that will make my video production process faster, smaller and more efficient. Sometimes that means taking the time to learn a new technology or master a different piece of equipment. If it improves your process then it will yield a return on your time investment.
How would you describe your ideal client?
I believe my ideal client is one that understands what I do and how that benefits them in the end. It’s important for me that my client to trust my instincts because I have the track record to support them. I will ask the right questions to ensure that the video I produce for the client will be successful. It does not end with the creation of the video, there needs to be a plan for how the video is delivered to the eyes that will benefit the most from viewing it as well as data by which to judge the effectiveness of the video. It’s a three-step process.
