We recently connected with Scott Rocco a.k.a Scotty Rock and have shared our conversation below:
Scott, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic started at home from an early age. Growing up in a middle class Italian American family with my hard-working parents and three older brothers certainly planted the seed. My father taught me to always be patient with everything. Eventually you get to where you want to be with hard work; a major lesson I learned from him. My mother is passionate and focused at anything she pursues. Whether it’s simple errands or her profession, she’s always tenacious. I think I was able to find balance and split the difference between both of their work ethics to formulate my own. I realized that if I move slow, steady, and strong, like you would in a marathon and not sprint, I would eventually achieve my goals and realize my dreams.
My childhood was very healthy and fun. I grew up in a beautiful suburban neighborhood with the best of friends. We were always outside playing sports, being active and creative. Watching my older brothers play sports and win championships inspired me to follow in their footsteps. I always looked up to them and still do. Learning from their wins and losses in life, including my own, helped me to grow into a strong resilient person with a good attitude.
Playing sports taught me the importance of teamwork, discipline, and developing a winner’s mindset. Having won championships and awards as a teenager ignited me to stay on that path and keep winning at life. As an adult, I still approach everything like an athlete. Today, I am a working musician and artist. My family has given me the foundation for a strong work ethic. They also inspire my music and stories that I write and sing about. I just released a song about my father called, “The Greatest Man” and it’s the best song I’ll ever write. I quote my father’s words from the song as a way to honor his legacy and help others… “Work hard, take care of yourself, and always be safe.”
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a working musician (professionally known by my nickname Scotty Rock) and artist. I enjoy the process of writing songs and movie scripts. My songs and stories all come from a good-hearted place to inspire and move people. I serve humanity with the gifts that God has given me to spread his message of love.
After my father passed, I wrote a song about him to honor his life and legacy. I titled the song, “The Greatest Man” because he was the greatest person in my life. The song was also a way for me to help heal from his passing. My hope is that it will serve as a catharsis to help heal many people who have endured a similar loss and to always cherish the memories of our loved ones.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
A hard-work ethic, good attitude, and winning mindset have kept me going the distance in life. You improve through patience, understanding, and the love you experience from family, friends, and significant others. Have good intention to serve others and let God lead the way on your journey.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I go for a long walk or hike in a quiet place and just breathe. It helps me to step away from any problem and find a solution.
