We were lucky to catch up with Scott Wismont recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Some of my fondest memories as a child were the summer road trips across the countryside. Stopping at every tourist-trap along the way, travel brought me closer to my family and the destinations that we visited, providing insights into other ways of life. These roadtrips were a defining moment that solidified my interest in helping as many people as I can experience travel.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started Rainbow Getaways because I believe that everyone deserves to travel while feeling confident and comfortable to enjoy and explore their destination. Members of the LGBTQ+ community face unique challenges to travel and I’ve built Rainbow Getaways to help alleviate as many stresses as I can for all my travelers.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Networking has been a skill that I’ve been working on since I was in undergrad, building relationships not just with my travelers, but with travel partners. The ability to network is a skill that sets successful business owners apart a the personal connection is needed to provide world-class service. Having a constant desire to learn new things is also extremely important. The world is constantly changing, and having a desire to learn means that I never fall behind. This is especially important in the world of travel as rules and laws change just as much as travel trends.
Finally, being able to delegate what is not my expertise is a skill that I’ve had to fine tune over the last several years. This frees up my time for what I excel at while supporting other small businesses who specialize in something I’m not so good at.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I believe business owners should focus on their strengths and hire talent to fill in the gaps. Most business owners that I know start out by minimizing business expenses and trying to do it all; however, this means that the things you don’t know well aren’t going to be done well. You may be able to get by with the basics for a little while, learning as you go, but at some point, asking an expert to help is going to be in your best interest. The sooner that you ask for help, the less they have to undo and correct.
Marketing has been one of my least favorite activities and creating inspiring marketing content has long been a personal struggle. It was one of the first things that I offloaded and hired someone to complete because they knew how to reach people in more effective ways.
