We recently connected with Sean Atkins and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My parents, both of whom were government employees, instilled in me what it was like to have a routine, put in the work, and be professional (and respectful) to everyone I encountered.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve been a professional film critic in the Nashville area for almost 10 years. Originally a board member of the Music City Film Critics’ Association (MCFCA), I eventually became President of the critics group once the vacancy became open a few years ago. Through my work and determination along with fostering good relationships with studios and PR firms, I’ve made our critics group one of the most recognized film critics groups in the United States. I enjoy hearing from critics in our group and seeing them get so excited around awards seasons when the studios send our group digital (and physical) screeners for their films for us to consider in our voting.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Dream big 2. Work hard
3. Be respectful to everyone you encounter
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
We are always trying to grow our critics group in terms of notoriety and respect amongst the studios. Anything to help us grow will only enhance our presence in the minds of these studios we work with.
