We recently connected with Sean Petersen and have shared our conversation below.
Sean , thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
Unfortunately, experiencing burnout is very common nowadays, as it can be challenging to maintain a good work-life balance. I’ve struggled with burnout myself several times because of poor stress management, but over the years, I’ve learned how to overcome it more efficiently.
For me, a crucial step in overcoming burnout is prioritizing self-care. It’s essential to replenish your energy by focusing on good sleep habits, nutrition, exercise, social connection, and practices that promote well-being, such as meditating, journaling, and spending time in nature.
As soon as I notice I’m feeling overly tired, I change my behavior immediately, making use of flexible work options and setting limits on the amount of time I spend reading e-mails and taking calls. Another thing I do to overcome burnout is reduce exposure to job stressors. This entails resetting the expectations of colleagues and even family members for what and how much I’m willing to take on.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the founder and owner of Golf Trip Junkie. The story of my business came from trying to find a way to make a living while also enjoying my two biggest passions – golf and traveling. I had the idea of starting Golf Trip Junkie while I was playing, and I knew immediately that this was exactly what I wanted to do.
My first client was an acquaintance who wanted to go on a golf vacation with his buddies. One of my friends told him about my newly started business, put the two of us in contact, and the rest is history.
I’ve planned golf vacations to multiple top golf destinations worldwide, including Scotland and Ireland, as well as across the United States to destinations such as Miami, Orlando, Williamsburg, Tampa, and Scottsdale. Golf Trip Junkie is bound to offer clients, regardless of their skill level, a unique, memorable experience they can share with their family or friends. I am glad to be able to cater to golf enthusiasts all over the country and to grant them access to some of the most iconic golf courses.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe the most impactful qualities and skills that helped me throughout my journey were perseverance, being organized, and enthusiasm.
Perseverance is essential if you want to start a business from scratch, as you’re inevitably going to encounter some obstacles, and while this could discourage you from carrying on, it’s very important to remember that you shouldn’t let this prevent you from moving forward. Remembering why you’re doing what you’re doing, as well as the bigger picture, was the key to developing perseverance for me.
Being organized is a crucial skill in starting a business and making it flourish. It leads to more efficient administration, better productivity, expansion and growth, a strong brand identity, and resource optimization, to name a few. There are many ways to improve your organizational skills – making lists, delegating tasks, efficient time management, reducing clutter, etc.
Finally, the key ingredient without which Golf Trip Junkie wouldn’t exist today is enthusiasm. Without enthusiasm, I couldn’t make progress in terms of business growth, as I wouldn’t have anything to drive me further and make me want to accomplish more. Enthusiasm comes from within, and its source is different for everyone, depending on their passion.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Whether it be with work, social obligations, or just life in general, we all feel overwhelmed or stressed at some point. It’s important to give yourself grace when you have these feelings and to take a deep breath and step away for a moment.
Asking for help is always a good idea if you feel overwhelmed because of the volume of work you have to do, and this is what I do in times of crisis. If possible, I delegate some of my tasks to reliable people who can help me, which creates some breathing space.
Last but not least, as a nature lover, when I feel overwhelmed, I also make sure to take some time to enjoy the great outdoors and take some time out from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
