We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Serena Rae. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Serena below.
Hi Serena , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from watching my family. My parents taught me to always work hard and do my best in whatever I do. Through their example, I was taught to go after every opportunity that was presented to me. You can’t control the outcome of life, but you can control the effort you put in.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As an Independent Artist, I am most proud of the fact that I have complete creative control of everything I release. From producing and writing my own music, to marketing and visuals, I am grateful that I have the power to control how my content is viewed and heard. One thing that makes my music unique is I write my own songs. In mainstream music today, it is not common for the artist to be the sole writer of their music. I am blessed to have the gift of songwriting and I am even more grateful that I have the resources to share them with the world. With that being said, I just released a collaborative concept EP with my brother, Samson Colors, and our longtime friend YB RICH called, ‘WHY WE PARTY.’ Usually we all release and write our own music, but on this project YB RICH made the beats while Samson Colors and I wrote the lyrics and melodies. We tried to tell a cohesive story of different reasons why people party: to be fake, to be accepted, when questioning life or love, or to forget. I am really proud of the finished product and glad everyone is finally able to hear it! I am also working on my debut album, which I am hoping will be released by the end of the year.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
3 core areas for me on this journey have been values, determination, and perspective. Values are what guide my life through my music career and my personal life. I have found that having values keeps me grounded and helps me remember that although I am chasing a dream of continuing to grow on my musical journey, that growth does not define my worth as a person. Determination is what lead me to start a career in music, deciding to follow my own path, and it is what continues to drive me to keep growing in my career. Lastly, perspective. I won’t pretend I am great at keeping things in perspective when things don’t look the way I want them to. Whether that be the numbers game or seeing others doing things I’d like to, but I try to keep my head down and remind myself to do my own job and work at my own pace. What I do in my life is my own journey and what others do is theirs.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was encourage me to use my gifts and talents always. They created a space for my brother and I, to not only use our gifts, but put in the time, effort, and money to help us pursue them. I am forever grateful to them for that!
