We were lucky to catch up with Shakila Stewart recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shakila, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
To nourish and sustain my creativity, I engage in a multi-faceted approach. I delve into the rich history of artists in dance, film, and music, drawing inspiration from their timeless work such as; Katherine Dunham, Miles Davis, Arthur Mitchell and Spike Lee. I also actively participate in weekly ballet, modern dance and fitness classes that serve as a dynamic outlet for my own artistic expression.
Attending artist networking events allows me to connect with like-minded individuals, fostering a collaborative and stimulating environment.
Additionally, staying closely connected to artists who are dedicated to honing their craft provides an ongoing wellspring of motivation and fresh perspectives, ensuring that my creative spirit remains vibrant and evolving.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Growing up with a passion for dance, acting, modeling, speaking and a deep connection to Christ, I was Inspired by the transformative power of the arts, while also being guided by my Christian values, I set out to merge my love for the arts with a mission to empower women and youth.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my journey, three qualities that proved most impactful were faith, volunteering, and the ability to speak up for myself. Here’s some advice for those early in their journey:
Faith:
Trust in something greater than yourself. Faith provides strength during challenges and keeps you focused on your purpose.
Advice: Cultivate a daily practice of praying, journaling and listening to uplifting music to anchor yourself in moments of uncertainty.
Volunteerism:
Giving back not only contributes to the community, but also enriches your own life. Volunteering instills a sense of purpose and builds meaningful connections.
Advice: Explore various causes and find one that aligns with your values. Dedicate time to serve, and witness the positive impact it has on your personal growth.
Speak Up for Yourself:
Advocating for your needs is crucial. Whether in personal or professional settings, expressing yourself fosters understanding and empowers you to navigate challenges.
Advice: Practice assertiveness. Clearly communicate your thoughts, needs, and boundaries. It’s an ongoing skill that becomes more refined with experience.
Remember, every journey is unique, so embrace your individual path and learn from every experience. The combination of faith, volunteerism, and self-advocacy can be a powerful foundation for personal and professional growth.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
For me, the most influential figure in overcoming challenges and acquiring the essential skills for success has been my mother. Her unwavering strength as a woman of faith, enduring 20 years as a dialysis patient, and yet never losing her zest for life has been an extraordinary example.
From her, I’ve imbibed the values of resilience, self-love, the importance of pursuing dreams, giving back to others, and making joy a constant priority.
Her teachings have been a guiding force shaping my journey and contributing significantly to my personal and professional development.
