We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shane Moravsik a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shane, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
I have realized there will always be people that will try to drag you down to their level. There will always be people better than you, and worse than you. Take the energy they are giving you and use it to better your craft. Jealousy can be a horrible thing, and can cause people to turn on you despite you giving them no reason to do so. On the same token, you must be ready to use that energy to better yourself instead of letting it get you down.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I enjoy creating cosplay photography that you can not only see, but feel as well. I enjoy photographing characters with strong personalities, where I can bring out the personality of the character in the photos. I pride myself in using natural lighting to my advantage instead of bringing large light setups to my photoshoots.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me, having at least some knowledge of the character before doing a photoshoot (in order to bring out their personality) was one of the biggest things I found that helped me improve my photography. Taking pictures at angles and using props to accentuate the pictures also helps my photography stand out from the rest. For example, using Harley Quinn’s bat right next to the camera allows for an interesting point-of-view shot rather than just taking a straight-on picture.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is one who shares the drive to help create a unique vision. Someone who is ready to think outside of the box and ready to try new pose ideas for their character. I have seen so many photographers and cosplayers do the same generic poses for their characters, and my ideal client would be ready to break that mold.
