Meet Shantel Davis

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shantel Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Shantel, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive by not giving up. I am a go getter. I also believe in if first you don’t succeed try try again. I do that in any work skill or hobby that I am trying to make a career out of. Jehovah helps me to keep my creativity alive.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Shantel Davis I am from Miami Florida. I am a Fashion Designer and Seamstress. I design clothes for Women, Children and some Men. I also customize clothing for people of all shapes and sizes. I don’t just design clothing I design face masks, headwraps, shawls, scarves, pillowcases, handbags and other accessories. I try to be versatile with sewing. I started my clothing brand Colors Are Beautiful back in October 2, 2012. I came up with this line because I design my clothes in all the colors of the rainbow. I feel without color my clothing will look dull and boring. In the year 2019 I decided to register my business with SunBiz.org, so now it’s called Colors Are Beautiful LLC. I wanted to prove to myself that I am capable of managing my own fashion and sewing business. I learned how to do that at Florida Technical College when I studied Business Marketing and Entrepreneurship. As for my passion for Fashion I learned how to sew at the age of 13 and I have taken classes here and there just to hone my skills. What makes my brand stand out because I design clothes that will make my customers comfortable, classy and confident. One that cannot be lost in a crowd. In December I was a Vendor in Zoomarama 9 I sold about 10 of my pieces from that event. This February I will be a Vendor again this time in Zoomarama 10. I really enjoyed being a Vendor for the first time for Nan’s Touch. The years I have been designing I have sold over 100 of my pieces. I feel for me that is the best accomplishment ever. My next project is to design Pajama sets on request.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
You should have patience, determination and motivation. I learned all these three by not giving up. I always kept on going even though I failed. I also learned that there will always be set backs in any career that you are trying to pursue. So with my sewing and designing I had set backs where I screwed up designs that the customers requested but I always fixed them. So pretty much I made the impossible possible. So to anyone out there who is trying to pursue any career of their dreams Don’t give up on your dreams, Don’t be afraid to fail because that’s how you learn from your mistakes. Also there will always be set backs. There is no such thing as getting things right for the first time. Lastly be around people who will motivate you and support you. Everyone needs people that will keep them going.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
One of my biggest challenges that I am facing right now is Pricing my items at the regular price. I know everyone always wants the best deals. Also customers always wants to compare your small business to thrift stores. For example Fashion Designers price their items very high for a purpose and the customers wants a discount. I feel that Fashion Designers are not to be treated like thrift stores. So yes this is one that I am still struggling with pricing my items and leaving it at the regular price because the customers that I deal with always wants a discount. I kindly tell them that I cannot give them a discount all the time. If I always give them a discount in my handmade clothing I will be cheating and robbing myself and that doesn’t look good for a Fashion Designer and Small Business Owner myself. I learned to find the right people that knows and understands my worth. Ones who values me as a Fashion Designer and Small Business Owner.
