Meet Sharon Berebichez

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sharon Berebichez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Sharon, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
This is something I learned from my father… he was an honorable man. People at his workplace loved him, he was a hard worker, always on time, very responsible and caring, treated everyone equally and with respect. His work ethic was admirable. Even when there were difficult times (and there were a few) he never gave up, making sure me and my sisters had everything.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a visual artist and art educator, born in Mexico City and based in Miami, Florida, for the last 11 years. In my practice, I’m constantly experimenting with new materials and techniques. For over 25 years, I’ve painted with acrylic and oil, created assemblages with found objects, and sculpture pieces in clay, wood and resin. Recently, I shifted my focus to fiber art.

As a process based artist, I rely on the repetition of movement and the creation of patterns like a meditative process that allows me to be present and mindful, making connections with my work and identity as a woman and as a third generation migrant. My use of texture and materials reflects my mixed Mexican, Guatemalan, and Jewish heritage, creating pieces that are both visually enticing and culturally significant.

Apart from my own practice I have my teaching studio where I have the privilege of teaching over 60 students, kids and adults were every day a get excited with them about all their projects and the process of making them.
I’m so lucky to absolutely LOVE what I do.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe there’s a moment for everything and everyone, if I could give any advice is to be patient. Enjoy the process, enjoy the moment of learning, experimenting, and most of all enjoy the work, the long hours of work because is the only way to get better at anything.

So PATIENCE, PERSEVERANCE and DO THE WORK

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I’ve learn so much from so many teachers, artists, books, psychologists… and of course a little bit of instagram and YouTube too!

The first person who truly inspired me to become a full time artist was my teacher, now friend and incredible artist Carlos Garcia de la Nuez. He is one of those teachers that come once in a lifetime that inspire you.

My husband has a view in life that I appreciate so much because he helps me dream big and encourages and supports me in all my crazy endeavors.

There’s nothing better than being humble and learn new things every day.
