We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sharon Bushy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Sharon, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I focus on the value that I am offering to my professional community rather than on the imposter syndrome. My work is not about me, it is about the people that I serve and the value that I aspire to provide.

Additionally, I remind myself that I need to credit the person I sit across the table with. If that individual sees value in my work, my knowledge, and my experience,. If that person tells me that I help solve problems, than that is all that matters.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a recent MBA graduate from Syracuse University. For over 9 years I have been working with brands to create growth strategies to help them reach revenue goals. In January of 2024, I launched my boutique growth agency: Business Building Blocks.

My agency marries sales with marketing to create 360-degree support for brands. Our focus is mission driven brands that prioritize the quality of experience that consumers have while using products and services. My niche is launching CPG brands for B2b and B2c sales channels.

When I am not working with phenomenal businesses, you can find me training at Krav Maga, painting portraits, or hanging out at Room 2 Studios (boutique studio in Atwater Village).

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Roll up your sleeves mentality: I am always excited and eager to be a counterpart in a project. I never turn away from an opportunity when it requires a little bit more organizational support.

2. I am not my work mindset: After a series of burnouts, I learned to separate myself from my world. There will always be another email, another deadline, another project. I put up boundaries to prevent myself from sacrificing my own life for my work.

3. The strategic mindset: working smarter not harder. When I first started my journey, I approached my work with the assumption that I need to put in “x” hours to be a qualified and successful professional. That leads to overworking. I know approach my work with, if I have “x” hours and ” y” resources, how to give stellar results.

My advice: Remind yourself it is a marathon. So pace, evaluate and be open to pivoting for your growth. If you stay consistent, you will get there.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I am lucky. My family believes that I can achieve anything. After high school, my parents told me- we will give you everything you need to succeed but we will not hold her hand and walk you to success. Figure it out. Know that we are are here if you fail and know that we will always be there to remind you to get up.
