We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sharon Champagne Terry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharon Champagne, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I remember when I was going to school for my G.E.D, there was a teacher whom assisted me with my resume. As we got into details regarding school and employment, she blurtd out loud ” You never finish anything!” I was completely caught off and devastated from the accusation. Although she instantly judged me without knowing what’s happening in my life, I took those words to heart because they were true. So I promised myself never start anything, without finishing it.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a true renaissance woman. I have been blessed with many gifts, that share with the world. I receive mist enlighten in my writing. It’s not only allow me to use my creative skills but it has also become my therapy. Of course I still pray and study the bible but writing gives me a freedom no one can take from me. I have a Gift in writing not a skill. Which means I have original ideas that originate from me. I don’t study to become a better writer, I write and study my own work to become relatable to my audience. Rather that’s Comedy, Sci-fi, Urban Fiction, or Romance
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey I know discipline, confidence/faith and determination were the things that kept me focused. It was important to be disciplined so I could figure out my next move. Believing in myself no matter what came to discourage me or attempt to break me away from my dreams, would be number one on my list. God gave me a vision and I will not stop until it’s complete. I have always been determined to be my best at everything I do, so I never failed I just learned new lessons.
If you are early in the journey please love yourself enough to know you deserve this opportunity and you are the B.O.S.S., which means build your own success story!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I actually take time to evaluate why I feel this way. You must be easy on yourself and take time for you. Being overwhelmed is just a familiar feeling in your brain and your body just reacts. The good thing is you are in control of it. I meditate often and I go back to the drawing board to see which project show real time production and which one does not. I lean more towards the project which I am flourishing in and make that one a priority.
