We were lucky to catch up with Sharon Goodenough recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sharon , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I’ve learned that moving outside of my comfort zone on a regular basis and playing in a world of “What if,” has totally changed the energy of how I practice as an artist. Detaching myself from the outcome and being in a state of play give me the freedom to paint how I feel. Thankfully I’ve maintained the insatiable curiosity of my childhood, and this constantly feeds my creative spirit with ideas. Visualising the things that brought me the most joy in childhood, which were always creative, enables me to tap into the essence of play and foster a mindset filled with limitless possibilities.
As well as painting, I’ve found that writing has been a huge creative outlet for me and I regularly practice “stream of consciousness writing” which allows me to find clarity within all the ideas that are constantly running through my mind. I used this style of writing when I was creating the content for my contribution to the book, “Radical Self-Love: How to Ignite Your Light Through Creativity.” I wanted to share how a healthy mindset and habits gave me the courage to step outside of my comfort zone, feel good-enough and show my artwork, which consequently lead me to several new opportunities, new collectors and gallery representation.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am Sharon Goodenough, an Artist and Author residing and creating in Ascot, UK. My artistic style has been described as contemporary impressionistic, I have a passion for the coast and capturing the dynamic interplay of light, blending vibrant skies, and depicting the fleeting ebb and flow of tides in the natural world. I pursued classical oil painting studies to refine my techniques, however I consider myself primarily self-taught.
Drawing inspiration from my background in photography, I enjoy experimenting with depth of field, perspective, and colour manipulation to transform my reference images into something captivating, distinct, and well-composed. My preferred tools are flat brushes, allowing me to craft unique and expressive marks in my work.
I’ve had the privilege of exhibiting my art internationally, with a collection represented by a gallery in Madrid. Additionally, my artistic journey has been featured in magazines, providing a glimpse into my path towards becoming a full-time artist. With my main focus being on art, I also love to write, and in August 2023 I co-authored a book in the Creative Lifebook Series, which became an Amazon #1 International Bestseller. Experiencing this was truly thrilling and confirmed for me the potent force that collaboration holds in fostering creative ideas. This year I am looking forward to creating a new collection of work to show this summer, exploring the ideas for offering an online course and taking my practice to the next level.
If you like my coastal style I am currently offering a Free Art Print from my “Ebb and Flow Collection” and to gain access the link is: https://prints.shzstudioart.com/freeartgift
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Mindset: This has proved to be the most vital aspect for me to move through fear and discomfort to experience the joy on the other side.
Growth: If you’re not growing, you’re dying. Keep reading books and developing new ideas & insights.
Play: Maintaining a playful, curious spirit, I believe keeps you young and creating.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am consistently open to networking and establishing collaborative partnerships with businesses that align with my focus. Specifically, I am eager to collaborate with interior designers seeking bespoke, original art that not only enhances the aesthetic of a space but also offers a personalised touch. Whether it’s adding value to a room’s design or creating a unique piece that reflect elements of a client’s life, such as memorable dates or initials, I can seamlessly incorporate these details into my artwork. If you share a passion for creating meaningful and distinctive pieces, I would welcome the opportunity to connect and explore potential collaborations.
