We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaun Rajah a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shaun, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I draw my resilience from my mother. She is my best friend, mentor, and backbone. Raising all three of us by herself, she instilled in me the belief that I could achieve anything with hard work.

My professional journey is a true American dream. Embracing the philosophy that life offers one chance, I took a leap at age 43. My career commenced at age 24, working at the iconic Drake Hotel in Chicago and recently at the Langham Chicago, accumulating over 20 years of experience. Having primarily focused on venues, this new venture allows me to share my passion for event planning in Chicago and globally. My firm- Events by Shaun Rajah is a Boutique- specializes in personalized, bespoke,- customizable, and luxury experiences. I’m excited about the opportunity to create memorable events and elevate the standards of celebration.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, three impactful qualities were determination, goal-setting with a clear timeframe, and confidence in knowing what I bring to the table. My advice for those starting their journey is to cultivate resilience, set specific goals with deadlines, and build confidence in your unique skills and contributions. Consistent effort, clear objectives, and self-assurance can pave a rewarding path.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my mother did for me was encouraging me to follow my dream in the hospitality industry, even when it was a different ball game 20 years ago. Despite the challenges, she never held me back. I vividly recall her concern, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? The pots and pans are bigger than you.’ To which I replied, ‘There is more to do than just cook.’ And that’s exactly what I did.
