We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shawana Davenport-Chapple a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shawana , so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
I worked in Hospice health care for many years. It was very hard especially through the Covid pandemic. We were working with limited manpower due to no one wanting to risk their life for such little pay.Two specific incidents happened(I was denied a raise, after training 4 people who were hired making above my salary.) I felt unheard/unseen after speaking to my supervisor, and the her supervisor who advised me there was nothing they could do, their hands were tied.I began to look at my options for other opportunities, but I had this burning desire to work for myself.Hospice had allowed for me to meet and care of some great people and learn that life was too short to just blend in. I didn’t need someone to decide my path for me the decision was mine alone to make. I decided, I was worth more.It was the greatest decision I ever made, I was able to write an award- winning children’s book “The Good Fortune”.I am proud owner of MizzAppropriate clothing.I was so afraid in the beginning of my decision making that I almost missed an opportunity of a lifetime. If there is anything that I learned from this experience is do not talk yourself out of being great and doing amazing things because your afraid, take a risk. It’s in that moment that you will find your true self, purpose, and worth.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
The Good Fortune has allowed me to be open to many creative ventures. I am currently working on an animation series and a board game project for more family fun time. I love being able to share new ideas with hopes of bringing families together. The amazing part about these particular projects is the possibilities are endless. Our MizzAppropriate clothing for girls will pre-launch its new designs in January and we look forward to welcoming everyone to our MizzAppropriate store soon.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Believe In Your Abilities Take The Leaps That Scare You The Most
Dreams will take you far, but action will take you further.
Everyday Learn Something New, Then Master It.
Attend Events/Speak With People Who Are Successful In Your Line Of Business.
Write Down Your Ideas or Plans.Take Steps Toward Each One(Daily)
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have given me is the value of family and working together. It has been my experience that no matter where you are in life or places you may go, family will always be your safe place.
