We were lucky to catch up with Shawn Frederick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shawn, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic came from my grandfather at a very young age. At about 12 or 13 years old, i’d spend my weekends with my grandfather on his construction job sites. So in lieu of sitting around the job trailer, he’d put me to work. That led to my early career in land development and residential house construction. You learn quickly that no one else will do it for you. Whether its the load of lumber needing moved up to the job site or the 250 yards of three foot ditches needing dug for the various underground lines that needed to be buried.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As my 30+ plus career in Media has come to a slow down, I have recently shifted my time and energy into building a fitness company with my longtime friend, Corey Eubanks. Corey, a former pro boxer and very well known stuntman in Hollywood had an idea for new sparring equipment and ran the idea past me. I immediately thought the idea was really good and after a bit of discussion, we decided to launch a fitness equipment brand around those ideas. Thus, SparTech Fitness was born.
With SparTech Fitness and our products, [SparTech ONE, SparTech Pendulum and now, SparTech MonoRail] our driving goal is to offer products that truly work. Meaning, even the most lazy person can use our products, and by their inherent design, you will get a serious workout. And with that, you will see results in very little time!
With ST-1, it was initially designed with our military men and women in mind that were deployed, and often in the middle of some remote location. SO the ST-1 had to be bulletproof in its design and functionality. It couldn’t rust or be affected by rain, sand or dirt blowing on it. That’s the approach we take in all of our products that Corey designs.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me, honesty, integrity and tenacity all come to mind when I think about my core qualities and what drives me. We all like to think that we would or wouldn’t do this or that in the face of adversity. But when you’re really challenged by life you only have yourself to look at in the mirror each day. So in every business deal, sales transaction or whatever, I literally think about my mom and grandfather and ask myself would this do them proud? Or would this embarrass them in any way? I know that sounds very corny, but its the truth!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
With SparTech Fitness, we are absolutely looking for people to collaborate with from all over the country. From Gym and Fitness Center owners and managers to our police academies and our military operators that seek to maintain a high level of fitness. Even to the person at home that wants to use our equipment in their garages or patios. Our products literally can be used by everyone wanting a better style of life and one that includes fitness.
