We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shayna Dreher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shayna, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Growing up, I always wanted to make my parents proud of me. At times, to a fault. It caused me to be pretty hard on myself, but it allowed me to always strive to do the best I can. Over time, I have learned to take a step back and give myself grace. But I have remained a hard worker, self-starter and now my goals are to impress my clients, make them proud to have hired me, and create a beautiful outdoor environment for them to enjoy.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I own Visionary Design Services, a reputable landscape design firm out of Murrieta, CA. We specialize in designing front and backyards for both new builds with dirt lots and older homes that need full overhauls. We pride ourselves on our detailed and easy-to-understand HOA drawings that help our clients receive HOA approval. We strive to help our clients visualize their yard’s design BEFORE construction starts by providing 3D renderings and walk-throughs. We love working with homeowners to increase curb appeal and create their dream yards!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My background is in Interior Architecture and that is what I studied in school, received my degree in, and developed a foundation of knowledge for the design industry. College was the time I really learned my drafting and 3D rendering skills – but after college was when I developed them. Running a design business requires organization, time management, and the ability to wear many hats. Knowledge and experience take time to acquire and once you have it, that’s when you feel the most confident.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed running my business, my household, and taking care of my two little guys (1 year old Asher and 3.5 year old Luke), the best way to manage that is to write everything down. I make to-do lists, create daily and weekly calendars, and prioritize the things that need to get done. My business is a priority but the most important thing to me is my family, and making time for them. It’s so important to be present, in the moment, and make lasting memories.
