We were lucky to catch up with Shellee Mendes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shellee, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
This took some time, Even when we have low self-esteem, we admire people with a higher one. Building myself self esteem I had to rub shoulders with people that were bigger than me and not feeling intimidated, in the beginning I was slightly uncomfortable, but I knew I had to get comfortable with being uncomfortable in order to fit in.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Well it’s been 20 years since I’ve launched Salon Monet I feel Salon Monet is a comfortable place where women men can come and be themselves consult and create a style that they are comfortable with. It’s a small space so it’s mainly one on one so the client feels totally engaged with their stylist. So that’s first and also making clients feel comfortable secondly performing a service that’s healthy for their hair and scalp. And that leads up to my product line. There’s a lot of product that’s out there that says one thing and does another. I would love a product that does exactly what it says And promotes healthy hair as well as a healthy scalp and that something I’m working on now .
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Never stop educating yourself.
If you’re looking to launch a business, it’s best to take a business course as well as bookkeeping & accounting. And customer service is as important as the service.
Treat people the way you wanna be treated.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Oprah Winfrey was always my biggest inspiration. Everything I thought of her and could possibly imagine I saw in her when we had dinner in Alaska.. Before meeting Oprah, I met someone with the same qualities as Oprah and she’s pretty powerful, very strong and very successful. She was my Oprah until I met the real Oprah and she inspired me and the biggest way. I can’t imagine where I would be without her..
