Meet shundilyn smith

We were lucky to catch up with Shundilyn Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shundilyn, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I believe that I gained understanding of resilience at a very young age. For as long as I could remember I’ve witnessed my grandma fight for her life. 1 stroke and 2 aneurysms later she still had so much joy inside of her. Dispute her circumstances she still laughed, smiled, sang and danced. Sometimes I’d look at her and feel sorry for her, for I couldn’t imagine myself in her shoes, but that’s because that wasn’t my path to walk! She woke up everyday looked everything negative straight in the eyes and made it beautiful. Even on her death bed she fought, until her literal last breath. She never once complained, she never let anything stand in her way, but most importantly with all odds against her, she never stopped fighting! She is the woman I aspire to be, my hero, the one who taught me that being resilient is one of the greatest characteristics and attitudes to have in life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Shundilyn Smith and I am a self published author of four books. I am currently workin on my 5th. I target readers who have stood tall in the face of adversity, who feel as if they are struggling alone, and most importantly black people. My poems are based on my personal experiences as well as things I’ve witnessed or heard within the black or female community. I believe this is special because I’m giving people who look like me an opportunity to breathe. To know that they aren’t alone and that they always have the strength and ability to recover from any trauma, abandonment, adversity or heartbreak. I am currently traveling at least twice a month doing events, sharing my testimonies with the world in hopes that it can touch at least one soul. My next step in my writing/publishing journey is to collaborate with a publishing company to gain more exposure and a larger distribution base.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When I reflect on my life, the three qualities that never fail to serve me are: resilience, positivity and determination. These three qualities have gotten me so much farther than any education or work ethic could have, and quite honestly these qualities have helped me improve my education and work ethic. My advice to anyone just starting their solo artist career (whatever their art may be) or a small business is to never take no for an answer, remember someone needs to hear/see your work and your voice matters. So remembering these things when you feel as if you want to quit and give up, may just fuel you with motivation..

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes I love a good collaboration! I am open to all collaborations that are mutually beneficial to both parties. I am open to all suggestions for collaborations and ways to further grow my business. If you have any ideas or would like to collaborate please feel free to email me: Shundilyn1@gmail.com or send a DM on IG: DilynThaPoet.
