We recently connected with Sierra Alston and have shared our conversation below.
Sierra , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I am usually the only African American woman in the room in the civil industry holding a c-suite position. However, one of my greatest gifts is being able to adapt to my environment. I possess vast knowledge in construction and have seen the good the bad and the ugly so there is very few topics I shy away from when it comes to speaking with my peers because I am usually able to relate.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that were most impactful in my journey would be my ability to cultivate relationships with clients. Being able to identify opportunities and taking advantage of every opportunity placed in front of me. My advice early in your journey would be to be fearless when starting a business. Focus on your client base which requires cultivating the right relationships. Spend time on the opportunities that will bring the most profit and growth. When opportunities come your way do not make the mistake of thinking the opportunity will always be available to you. Take advantage of the moment and make the best of it.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I have always had great mentors and been fortunate enough to be placed in rooms with people that were smarter than I am. Throughout my journey several industry leaders have contribute to my success.
