Meet Sierra Devoe

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sierra Devoe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Sierra, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Purpose is such a funny and multi-layered concept. Everyone is trying to find theirs and often time we are aiming at something that is a moving target and it can look various ways and different in each season of our lives. So when it comes to my purpose, it is whatever impact I want to have in that moment. Of course, my actions are guided by how I want to show up in the world, which is as a light. So my intention will always be to be a light regardless of the situation or moment at hand. That is my overall purpose to me. When I started my journey on finding my purpose and why I am even here on earth, I started thinking about the things I was passionate about, the things that brought to the edge of my seat if you will, but I did not stop there because even the things I were passionate about, the very things that lit a fire on the inside of me got old quick and had me once again asking the question “God, why am I here?!”. What really helped me and still helps me find my purpose and not become discourage, is spending alone time with God and allowing him to direct me and tell me what he have planned for my life currently. Like I said, purpose is a moving target and your assignments will change, so it is important to always check in and allow God to lead you. The amazing thing is that God will tell us and ensure what is said is confirmed! So the thing your family and friends say you do better than anyone else or that characteristic you think you may of got too much of, is the exact thing God uses to set you apart. I think when it come to purpose, we as people not only have an issue of finding it, but we want to aggrandize it. So when its not this grand, big ole thing we think our purpose is worthless when in fact that is just not true. I realized that whatever impact I have is the impact I was intended to have because everything works for the greater good. I truly believe that. Everyone has a purpose even when you think its small, trust me, in the greater scheme of things it is not!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
You know what, I love being a service to people. And, right now that looks like running my own nonprofit where we teach foundational financial literacy among the working class and spread financial education across the country. It is so special to me because its not the money I want people to be after or focus on but the opportunity to practice self autonomy and influence their own personal outcomes that come with being financially equipped. I want people to have the freedom of choice! They want to take a day off to spend with their loved ones, they want to travel, whatever they want to do, I want them to be able to make that choice and not be financially compromised of because of it. It breaks my heart seeing how hard we work just for a piece of the crumb. Not even the whole crumb, just a piece of it! Its inhumane and just flat our dehumanizing. We are literally told to pull ourselves up by the bootstrap, yet our boots are nailed to the got damn floor and super glued. People deserve to experience this life and not just always on go, go, go, hustle mode.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Only three, whew let me try to narrow it down. I think self discipline, emotional intelligence, and self awareness were the most impactful on my journey. I feel like these qualities will almost always lead you to your best self. These qualities have expanded not only my self concept but have allowed me to show up as my full self and embark on unimaginable opportunities. I am truly thankful to God for the evolution he took me under. For those early in your journey, please take your time, embrace your journey and truly absorb the lessons and experiences. You will get to where you are trying to. Do not rush, allow yourself to be formable. These are your impressionable years, so try everything that your heart desires! Keep what resonates and throw away what don’t. Please, please allow yourself to just be.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I have read many, many books. Many self help and healing books. They were good and served its purpose, so please read whatever and whichever ones that resonate with you. I am not trying to sound cliché, but the book that has played an instrumental role in my development is The Bible. But, I had to get there though. I was able to process the bible and refer it back to things I either read or experienced. I didn’t start with the bible, but it was a good thing I did not for me because I was truly able to be formed and shaped by God’s word. I mean the timing was perfect. I do not look at this book as a Do’s and Dont’s. . .I mean of course it gives wisdom and warnings, but it really do lead to life. It not only showed me who God was and the historic happenings, but it shined light on who I am and showed me my faults and allowed me to work through my limitations and blossom into this person that I look at everyday in the mirror and thank God for. Some of my favorite verses that help me throughout my everyday life is first thing first, But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well Matthew 6;33, Take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5, But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9, I mean I have so many more! I guess what I am trying to get at is the only reason I am is because God is. What I was trying to become, only God could be the potter. Remember, this is your journey and I am certain God will bring you whatever you need in this moment, even if it doesn’t look like it came directly from him. You will get to whatever it is.
