We were lucky to catch up with Siladityaa Sharma recently and have shared our conversation below.
Siladityaa, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
Overcoming creativity blocks can be challenging, but I’ve found a few techniques that work well for me. Firstly, I take a break and do something completely unrelated to the task. This could be as simple as listening to music, making coffee, or cooking a snack. Sometimes, when we’re stuck in a rut, a change of scenery can be beneficial in getting our creative juices flowing again.
I also deal with indecisiveness and trying to do too many different things simultaneously. This is because I have a lot of interests that may not be all related to each other, namely making music, interaction design, cars, gaming, etc. I have found a strategy where I will often use my other interests to eliminate creative block. If I am stuck at work with a product design task, I will often switch contexts altogether and start making music. This helps my brain to stop running around in circles and get a restart.
Sometimes, inspiration from other fields can also be helpful in my primary area of work. I often use the work ethic of artists I admire in music, automotive, and other entertainment industries. I also draw inspiration/competitive analysis from games and cars. Finally, sketching or creating design concepts is essential, even if you’re not inspired. Sometimes, putting ideas down on paper or a digital canvas can help break through the blockage and get the creative process going again.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Since I was a kid, I have never been able to figure out what I want to become when I grow up. This is still true today. I am fortunate enough to be in an industry I adore and admire, but I wonder if this is what I want my legacy to be. I don’t know if I want to stay a product designer, become a music producer, venture into fashion, or even get deeper into the technical/engineering side of creative tech. One thing I have always known inside me is to stay in touch with my creative and technical skills.
This is why I am focused on learning right now. I want to learn about my industry from my peers, leaders, and people I admire. Give it my best, and then only decide if I want to continue doing this for the rest of my life or if it’s time for a change. I would regret it if I ever abandoned design in tech too early. I plan to find a way to bring all my passions into one place, a lab of creativity, a free space for creative minds to come together and make together. That’s my dream.
I am aware this is a nod to my indecisiveness as of now. That’s not necessarily bad as long as it’s not mindless jumping around from one thing to another. I often run into scenarios where I need to learn how to introduce myself to the world. How does one begin to introduce their story when they don’t even know how it ends?
Today, I am introducing myself as a tech nerd with a computer science background and a designer who loves to express my ideas visually. I’m inspired by music, sci-fi movies, and video games, and I like to call my design process “experiments.” From wild conceptualization and ideation to realistic, accessible solutions, I want to make the unfeasible feasible. Experimentation with prototyping and testing is a way for me to see how my designs interact with people and their senses. Considering future tech, its implications, opportunities, and feasibility have shown me that my path in Interaction Design needs to be firmly rooted in ethics. Whenever I design, people come first.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important parts of my journey were learning to present my ideas, working together as a team with my peers, and not getting too attached to one idea. For anyone just beginning to embark on their journey as a professional creative – these are some of the most essential skills as you make your way through the industry. It’s crucial to learn how to strike a balance between self-improvement and co-creation.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking to collaborate with other people from all different sorts of industries. I think collaboration is the most important of creation. If there are folks who are interested in collaborating on design ideas, music projects or anything else please don’t hesitate to reach out to me on the plethora of social media options or email.
