We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sisse Marie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sisse Marie, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I think most artists have imposter syndrome. If you live on the edge and love to expand, you are kinda always in a state of “I don’t know what I’m doing” because often you haven’t done what you are about to do. You are always a little out of your comfort zone, which makes you feel vulnerable. But that’s what I love about my craft, and I have accepted that having imposter syndrome is a part of it, and that’s okay because then I know I’m not playing it safe.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Well, at the moment, I’m 8 months pregnant, so naturally I’m focusing on that. I’m staying super healthy by working out, meditating, and eating natural plant-based foods so I can bring a healthy, happy baby into the world. I have been a part of a couple of movies coming out this year. One of them is Zack Snyder’s sci-fi movie Rebel Moon. I worked on the project for almost 5 months, and I’m really excited to see the results of Rebel Moon part 2: The Scargiver coming out on April 19. I’m also super excited about the director’s cut of both movies 1 and 2. It was amazing to be a part of such an epic project and work with so many talented people.
I’m a part of another great sci-fi movie coming out this year called The Infinite Mission. It’s a passion project for a lot of people, and I can’t wait for people to see all the hard work that was put into it. The fact that I got to be a badass just makes it better.
Alongside all the acting, I’m working with Neurogan.com to spread awareness of natural remedies. I love giving people awareness of natural medicines for pain, anxiety, sleep deprivation, etc. They have supported me so much in my life, helping me stay focused, grounded, and healthy. I want people to know that there are alternatives out there that can work wonders. We are in the process of creating some great skincare products as well..
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Be unrealistic! I started my professional music career when I was 13 and never let go of my childish beliefs that I could create and be anything I wanted. That mindset led to record deals, world tours, number 1 hits, and more. I’m a girl from a small village in Denmark with no family members involved in entertainment. If I can do it, you can pursue whatever you are passionate about too. Sometimes the journey looks very different from what I imagined, but it can always be accomplished, even if the outcome may differ slightly from what you expected.
2. Be determined and consistent. You are stronger than you think. When you feel like quitting, don’t. Most of the time, there’s a little more in your tank. Nothing is more satisfying than overcoming your own thoughts and limiting beliefs. How you do one thing is how you do everything. So, make it a habit to always do your best. Your best may vary each day, and that’s okay.
3. Be grateful and surrender to the process. If you cultivate gratitude for what is, I guarantee you will lead a better, more fulfilling life. I always remind myself that everything is for me; nothing is against me, especially when it seems like everything is falling apart. It’s fascinating to look back at things that didn’t unfold as expected and later understand why they were precious gifts.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I’ve been in entertainment for most of my life. It never feels like the right time to start a family, especially for women. I suppose this is a common feeling for many women in different professions. There’s always another opportunity or project that could potentially change our lives and careers. With our bodies changing during pregnancy, there’s a natural pause we have to accept. After being in a constant “go” mode for a long time, shifting priorities can be tough. Something else takes precedence. But honestly, it feels incredible to be on this journey, and saying no is much easier than I expected. I’m embracing the process, and when I feel ready to return to the grind, I will. So, perhaps it’s not really a challenge after all; the true challenge is being the best mom I can be.
