Meet Skye Choyce

We were lucky to catch up with Skye Choyce recently and have shared our conversation below.

Skye, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
At the age of 16, I started baking. If you were to ask me at 16 if that is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I would’ve told you ‘no’. I was fully invested in being a police officer to make a difference in my community as a woman and a black individual. I’ve always strived to make a difference in everything I do, so I just knew being a cop would bring change to my community. Well things changed during the course of life and I ended up finding myself back in the kitchen.

COVID hit worldwide and I lost my job. I had to figure out what I was going to do to sustain. My Nana had recently passed and all I could hear was her telling me to “sell them cakes pooh.” She always believed in my ability to create beautiful cakes and run a business. I eventually listened to that voice in my head, but I started small.

Perfect Choyce started by selling chocolate strawberries. Then about 6 months into having a new business, I found out I was pregnant! As you can imagine, I was going through a rollercoaster of emotions. I had to figure out how I was going to run a business, be a mom, and still maintain everything else.

Well little did I know, my baby boy would become the help I needed to push through! Kai Dallas is my purpose! I knew I had to set a great example for my son. I knew I had to buckle down and become a new woman! Being a mompreneur has been one of the most rewarding jobs ever! I get to do what I love on a daily basis with my little sidekick!

I look forward to baking cakes, doing pop ups, and having photoshoots with Kai! He keeps me going in a way I can’t even explain! He always tell me “good job” when I’m done making cakes and it’s the best feeling ever! Seeing his face light up when he gets to taste test the cakes and try the leftover banana pudding is the same excitement I look for in my clients!

Happiness through food is my purpose! Kai Dallas is my purpose!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Skye Choyce, the Cake Dealer and owner of Perfect Choyce! I began baking at age 16 and turned my hobby into my dream career when COVID hit.

I was born in San Jose, but moved to Mississippi at a very young age. I moved around a lot between the south from Louisiana to Texas. Eventually, my family decided to move back to California after all the natural disasters.

“Perfect Choyce” comes from a campaign I did in middle school. I wanted to run for ASB president and needed a slogan. Mine was ” Skye Choyce is the right choice!” Well as you can imagine, I still feel the same, expect now I’m the Perfect Choyce!

I specialize in custom cakes and never-before-seen designs and flavor combinations! I offer so many custom confections, you’re guaranteed to love one!

My experience with baking for events is pretty broad and I can accommodate any special occasion. It can be as special as an engagement party or as simple as a sweet tooth fix for yourself! I look forward to baking for you, and I aspire to make each of your orders as sweet and memorable as can be!

Perfect Choyce has now been in business 3 years! We’ll be approaching year 4 in October and we’re so excited for all the new things we’ve got planned! We’ll be releasing more online content, hosting classes, dropping merch, and finally shipping products! It’s been a long time coming, but this is just the beginning of Perfect Choyce ‘The Brand’ and not just the bakery!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 things that have gotten me this far on my bakery journey are the willingness to learn, willingness to trust God, and willingness to fail. When starting this journey, I had no idea what I was doing. I just knew deep down in my heart this is what I wanted to do and I wasn’t going to give up!

I’ve continued to practice my craft even when I didn’t have orders. I have given away free cakes and samples so others could try my desserts and be able to refer people. I have posted fliers at any place that would allow me. I would do just about anything to get my name out there. I’ve continued to take classes and practice new thing I learn on a daily basis. Running a cake business isn’t just about the cakes.

And on the days that I felt like giving up, I prayed. I prayed hard. I prayed with conviction and ambition. I leaned on God to tell me which way to go and how to continue on. Things have always worked in my favor, even through the failure. There have been times I’ve messed up. However, instead of dwelling on what I did wrong, I would evaluate the situation and see how I can grow and be better.

Realizing that life isn’t a race has also helped along the way. It’s not always about when, but more about the win. For anyone starting their small business journey, you have to trust the process, keep your faith strong, and never give up! I’m almost 10 years into baking and I never thought this would be my passion and really a dream come true!

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth in this last year has been consistency. Being a mompreneur means having to balance life between running your own business and having a child. Now that my son is old enough for daycare, he goes to school during the week, which gives me time to focus on the business during the day. I have a pretty set schedule for him after school, which also makes it easier for me to be able to work on content and admin work while he sleeps. I always prep my weekend orders on Thursday, so I’m not rushing during the creative process on the weekends. I like to do pop ups and events on weekends after pickups to be able to expose my business to new faces and returning ones. I’ve also become consistent with posting daily on Instagram. My next goal is to work on my Tik Tok!

Creating this schedule and sticking to it has helped bring in more clients, more followers, and ultimately– more money! Consistency is key!
