We were lucky to catch up with Slick Guruzee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Slick, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
One of the biggest misconceptions about being creative is that it’s some sort of special talent or ability. When I think about being creative, the first thing that comes to mind is the human experience. For me, creativity comes from experiencing and going through daily life. You remember that random homeless guy you saw today but paid no attention to? Or maybe a nostalgic sound that can make you reminisce on some of your favorite moments. Sometimes I’m able to draw inspiration from such a small moment and turn it into something magnificent. My creativity is kept alive by always remaining open, focusing on key details, and giving myself the chance to be humble and free.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I embody authenticity in my music, channeling the essence of street life with an unfiltered and raw touch – that’s the Slick Guruzee way. Balancing the demands of the rap game with my entrepreneurial venture in the fashion scene, I embrace the hustle with unwavering dedication. There’s a buzz of anticipation surrounding what’s next for me – be it the upcoming tracks that promise an unapologetic sound or the fresh line of gear that truly captures the genuine essence of Guruzee.
Unlike some artists who chase fame or fortune, my focus remains steadfast on family. It’s not just about personal success for me; it’s about laying the foundation for a brighter future for my loved ones. In a world filled with pretense, I keep it genuine, steering clear of frills and embodying the real deal in both my craft and my life. Stay tuned for the authentic journey that I, Slick Guruzee, continue to unfold – a journey that transcends beats and threads, resonating with the pulse of the streets.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three of the biggest qualities that were the most impactful in my life were integrity, the ability to be optimistic, and being respectful, Being able to display all three are a true test of one’s character. My advice to everyone currently in their journey is to always remain yourself while giving other’s the respect to do the same. Always remember to treat people how you’d expect to be treated and you’ll be good!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Being in the music industry, you’ll learn the difference between business and emotions. Learning to keep your emotions out of business is key when dealing with most of my peers. The 48 Laws of Power has given me the keys to understand ways to navigate different decisions while understanding the outcomes of those decisions. Most of the things I read are merely books, but instead they’re mind exercises. Have you read it?
