We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sophie Nelson-Crouse a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophie , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I’m originally from Haiti an underdeveloped country where substantial socio-economic inequalities and political unrest have long plagued the lives of its citizens. Being resilient is within most Haitians since we have had to overcome a lot. As for myself, on May 5th, 1996, I experienced the unthinkable. My father was shot in Haiti. This early trauma along with other life obstacles have made me the woman I proudly am today. While I can’t mostly pinpoint those tumultuous times on my resilient nature, I can however recognize that being able to move forward when life gets tough is one of the best qualities I could have.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own and manage two companies. EBMS Inc is a practice management consulting firm, which operates in Michigan, Ontario, and the United Kingdom for professionals such as (doctors, dentists, vets, lawyers, chiropractors, and engineers, or any small to mid-size business owners with revenue of 5 million or less. My company provides business consulting, leadership development, and talent acquisition. We also assist them in compliance or even grant proposals, and more for those professionals who are either looking to grow or find efficient ways to run their practices. I also own Elite Cleaning a property management and cleaning service that serves Windsor-Essex County. I’m very happy that I work for myself as it gives me the flexibility to focus on my other passions. Although I left Haiti many years ago, it will always be my home. I am hopeful that I can help make it a better place for my fellow citizens. Domestic violence is a cause I’m very passionate about that is why I would like to create the first National Domestic Violence Centre in Haiti, which will integrate my legal, social, and entrepreneurial skills.
While the focus will be helping those experiencing domestic violence, the center will also help alleviate some of the physiological needs, that many of Haiti’s youth endure because they are maladjusted in Haitian society. Unfortunately, there has not been any stride yet made by the governmental officials in providing this type of service. Although it is saddening that a service like that is still needed. Nonetheless, far too many women and children have lost their lives because it is not available for those who desperately need a place of refuge. Therefore, this center would be the first of its kind in Haiti. It is my dream one day to return home and contribute to the ongoing development of the country.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Apart from the aforementioned resilience, generosity, empathy, and ambition have led me to this journey. It took me long to recognize my generous nature as a good thing. I often felt that some people would perceive me as a pushover or even take advantage of it. However, it became clearer that it was one of my best qualities when I had the right people by my side. One piece of advice I could give others is to never let anyone change your good heart no matter how badly they may treat you.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always open to collaboration, suggestions, or even participation in networking events. Don’t hesitate to contact me regarding likeminded passions or business ideas.
